PART 2

The blinking red light inside the old smoke detector was so small that no one noticed it.
No one except the man sitting inside a white delivery van parked across the street.
He lowered a pair of headphones and stared at the monitor on his dashboard.
Every word inside the Salgado house had just been recorded.
"Got everything," he muttered.
Then he picked up his phone.
"It's time. Call her."
Inside the living room, silence became unbearable.
Ramón was the first to recover.
"You've been spying on us?" he barked.
Abril calmly locked her phone and slipped it back into her pocket.
"No."
"I simply learned something prison teaches very quickly."
She looked directly at him.
"Never trust the people who smile while they're planning to bury you."
Paola crossed her arms.
"So what?"
"You secretly recorded us."
"That's not going to magically make this your house."
Abril didn't answer.
Instead, her phone rang.
An unknown number.
She answered on speaker.
"Miss Salgado?"
"Yes."
"My name is Daniel Ortega. I'm an investigator hired by the family of the woman who died in the traffic accident two years ago."
Every face in the room instantly changed.
Ramón slowly stood up.
"What do you want?" Abril asked.
"I've been trying to reach you for months."
"I finally have proof that you weren't driving that night."
Emiliano's knees nearly gave out.
Two years earlier...
The victim's husband, Arturo Medina, never believed Abril's confession.
Every time he attended court, something felt wrong.
The woman standing before the judge cried whenever someone mentioned a little brother.
The man sitting behind her—Emiliano—never once looked at her.
Arturo couldn't explain it.
But it bothered him.
After the trial ended, he hired former police investigator Daniel Ortega.
Not to seek revenge.
To find the truth.
Daniel spent nearly eighteen months rebuilding every minute of the crash.
Traffic cameras.
Gas station receipts.
Cell phone locations.
Repair shop invoices.
Witnesses who had never been questioned.
At first...
Nothing.
Then one forgotten security camera from a pharmacy changed everything.
The footage clearly showed who climbed out of the driver's seat.
It wasn't Abril.
It was Emiliano.
Back in the present, Daniel continued speaking.
"I also located someone else."
"A tow truck driver."
"He heard your father coaching your brother before police arrived."
Ramón's face turned ghostly white.
Daniel continued.
"He secretly recorded the conversation because he believed your father was trying to bribe him."
Abril felt her heart stop.
"There was... another recording?"
"Yes."
"I have it."
Without warning, Paola lunged toward Abril.
"You lying snake!"
She tried grabbing the phone.
Abril stepped aside.
Paola slipped on the alcohol she herself had sprayed across the tile floor.
She crashed into the dining table.
The bottle shattered.
Glass scattered everywhere.
"My baby!" she screamed.
Emiliano rushed to help her.
Abril instinctively moved forward too.
Paola slapped her hand away.
"Don't touch me!"
For a brief second...
Abril remembered every prison night she had spent worrying about her brother's family.
She had imagined holding her future niece.
Buying tiny dresses.
Teaching her to sew.
Now she realized...
Those dreams had only existed inside her.
Ramón suddenly exploded.
"Enough!"
He pointed at Abril.
"You owe this family!"
"You chose to confess!"
Abril laughed.
It was the first time anyone had heard her laugh in years.
"Really?"
"I chose?"
She pulled another file from her hidden folder.
Audio.
She pressed play.
Ramón's own voice echoed through the living room.
"If you love your brother, you'll take the blame. Otherwise, his life is finished."
Then Teresa's voice.
"God will forgive this little lie."
Then Emiliano...
Crying.
"I'm sorry, Sis... I'm scared."
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
A slow clap came from the front door.
Everyone turned.
A middle-aged man in a dark suit stood there.
Next to him...
An elderly woman carrying several thick folders.
Daniel Ortega had arrived.
Behind him stood Arturo Medina.
The widower.
The husband of the woman who died.
His eyes met Abril's.
For two years...
He had hated her.
Now...
He wasn't sure what he felt.
Daniel held up an official-looking folder.
"I've already submitted a request to reopen the criminal investigation."
Ramón tried to slam the door.
Daniel stopped it with one hand.
"You may want to hear the rest."
The elderly woman stepped forward.
"My name is Laura Cervantes."
"I'm a forensic document examiner."
She placed several property deeds on the table.
"The transfer of this house..."
She looked directly at Emiliano.
"...contains three forged signatures."
Teresa gasped.
Paola slowly backed away.
Laura continued.
"The original mortgage records also disappeared from the bank archive."
"But someone forgot one thing."
She removed an envelope.
Inside were dozens of payment receipts.
Every single monthly mortgage payment...
Made by Abril Salgado.
Eight years.
Without missing one.
The room became deadly quiet.
Emiliano collapsed into a chair.
"I didn't want this."
Ramón rounded on him.
"Shut up!"
"You'll ruin everything!"
Daniel smiled slightly.
"No, Mr. Salgado."
"You already ruined everything."
He opened his tablet.
Security footage from the notary office appeared.
The family watched themselves signing the fraudulent transfer.
Then the notary accepted a thick envelope of cash from Ramón.
The timestamp was undeniable.
"So..." Daniel said quietly.
"We now have possible evidence of fraud..."
"Forgery..."
"Obstruction of justice..."
"False testimony..."
"And conspiracy to frame an innocent person."
Paola whispered,
"This... can't be happening."
Arturo finally spoke.
His voice was calm.
"My wife died because someone drove drunk."
He looked directly at Emiliano.
"For two years..."
"I hated the wrong person."
He turned toward Abril.
"I can't bring my wife back."
"But I can make sure your sacrifice wasn't for nothing."
Abril lowered her eyes.
Tears finally escaped.
Not because she was weak.
Because for the first time in two years...
Someone believed her.
Suddenly...
A loud knock echoed through the house.
Three sharp bangs.
Then another.
Everyone froze.
Daniel slowly smiled.
"They're earlier than I expected."
"Who?" Teresa whispered.
Before anyone answered...
A voice thundered from outside.
"Police!"
"Open the door!"
Ramón's face drained of every last drop of color.
He looked toward the kitchen window.
Toward the back gate.
Toward the hallway.
Searching desperately for an escape.
But what he didn't know...
Was that someone inside this very house had already called the police...
Nearly forty minutes earlier.
And that person...
May you like
Wasn't Abril.
To Be Continued...
