CHAPTER 5 — "MY FATHER LET HER RUN... BECAUSE THE FBI HAD BEEN WAITING FOR TEN YEARS."

"Don't chase her."

My father's handwritten words refused to leave my mind.

Every instinct screamed that Vivian had to be stopped before she disappeared forever.

But my father had underlined the sentence twice.

Don't follow her.

The detective lowered his radio.

"You knew she would run?"

I handed him the note.

He read it twice before looking at Mr. Halloway.

The attorney nodded slowly.

"Richard never wasted ink."

For several long seconds, no one spoke.

Then the older detective reached for his phone.

Instead of calling the officers chasing Vivian...

He dialed a different number.

When someone answered, he said only six words.

"The package has left the building."

Nothing else.

He ended the call.

Grant frowned.

"What package?"

The detective ignored him.

I stared at the man.

"Who were you calling?"

He hesitated.

Then he looked toward Mr. Halloway.

The attorney gave a slight nod.

The detective finally answered.

"Not local police."

My heartbeat quickened.

"Then who?"

He reached into his jacket and produced another badge.

This one wasn't from the city.

It carried a gold seal.

"My name isn't Detective Ross."

He flipped the badge open.

Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The room fell silent.

Grant actually laughed.

"This has to be a joke."

"It's not."

The agent placed a thick file on the table.

Across the front were the words:

OPERATION IVORY.

My eyes stopped on the name.

Ivory.

The pearls.

My mother's pearls.

The FBI agent noticed my expression.

"Your father picked the operation's nickname himself."

I could barely speak.

"My father worked with the FBI?"

"For almost two years."

Grant's face turned pale.

"That's impossible."

"No," the agent replied quietly.

"What's impossible is believing Richard Carter knew less than he pretended."

Mr. Halloway opened the file.

Inside were photographs.

Bank transfers.

Airline tickets.

Corporate records.

Hidden cameras.

And dozens of surveillance photos.

Every single one featured Vivian.

Some included Grant.

One photograph stopped me cold.

Vivian was standing beside a woman in a navy coat.

The woman's face was older.

Elegant.

Sharp blue eyes.

Her name was written underneath.

Margaret Hale.

I looked at the FBI agent.

"Who is she?"

He answered immediately.

"The woman who introduced Vivian to your father."

I frowned.

"I thought they met at a charity gala."

"They did."

"But it wasn't an accident."

Grant slowly shook his head.

"No..."

The agent slid another photograph toward him.

"This was taken six months before the gala."

Vivian and Margaret sat together inside a café.

Planning.

Talking.

Smiling.

Waiting.

Grant whispered,

"My mother never told me..."

The agent interrupted him.

"Because your mother wasn't looking for love."

He pointed to another page.

"She was looking for Richard Carter."

Everything inside me went cold.

My father hadn't fallen in love.

He'd been targeted.

The FBI agent continued.

"For over a decade, Margaret Hale recruited women who married wealthy widowers."

"What happened afterward depended on the victim."

Mr. Halloway finished the sentence.

"Some lost companies."

"Some lost property."

"Some died before anyone questioned the paperwork."

The office suddenly felt smaller.

"Were they murdered?"

The agent met my eyes.

"We've never been able to prove it."

Grant staggered backward into a chair.

"No..."

"My mother wouldn't..."

The agent remained expressionless.

"We've learned not to underestimate people motivated by greed."

I looked through more photographs.

Then I saw something impossible.

One picture showed my father.

He was smiling.

Shaking Margaret Hale's hand.

The timestamp was only eight months before he died.

Confused, I looked up.

"If he knew who she was..."

"...why was he meeting her?"

The FBI agent smiled faintly.

"Because by then..."

"...she didn't know he knew."

The realization hit me like lightning.

My father hadn't been the victim anymore.

He'd been playing along.

Pretending to trust her.

Pretending to decline.

Pretending to lose.

Every signature.

Every conversation.

Every fake argument.

Everything had been part of a trap.

Grant covered his face.

"Oh my God..."

The agent nodded.

"Exactly."

He reached into the file one last time.

"There is something Richard instructed us to give you only after Vivian fled."

He placed a small sealed envelope in front of me.

Across the front, in my father's handwriting, were the words:

For Clara — After Vivian Runs.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Nothing else.

It showed my father standing beside a smiling little girl.

She couldn't have been older than six.

I had never seen her before.

On the back of the photograph, my father had written:

"This is Emily."

Beneath that...

Only one sentence.

"She is your sister."

The room went completely silent.

Grant stared at me.

Mr. Halloway slowly removed his glasses.

Even the FBI agent looked uncomfortable.

Because everyone in the room understood the same terrifying truth.

The inheritance...

The forged will...

The missing evidence...

None of it had been my father's biggest secret.

He had been protecting another daughter.

And somewhere...

Emily was still alive.

May you like

Unaware that someone had already started hunting for her.
