Chapter 4 – "The Man Emily Called 'Daddy' Had Been Dead for Eight Years."

Nobody moved.
The child's drawing lay in the middle of the conference table like it had a heartbeat of its own.
ME AND DADDY.
Those three crayon words were enough to unravel everything the FBI believed they knew.
Agent Ross stared at the date again.
Three weeks ago.
Impossible.
Richard Carter had been buried four months earlier.
He couldn't have visited Emily.
He couldn't have posed for a drawing.
He couldn't have been alive.
Yet someone had.
Ross carefully placed the drawing into an evidence sleeve.
"Run every forensic test."
The younger agent nodded.
"It already started."
"No."
Ross's voice became firm.
"I want everything."
"Paper."
"Ink."
"Fingerprints."
"DNA."
"Pollen."
"Dust."
"Even the crayons."
"If someone touched this, I want a name."
The agent hurried out.
Grant rubbed both hands through his hair.
"I don't understand any of this."
"Neither do we," Ross admitted.
"And I don't like cases I don't understand."
An hour later...
We were sitting inside a secure FBI field office on the outskirts of the city.
No windows.
Gray walls.
A single round table.
The atmosphere felt less like an office and more like a bunker.
Ross dimmed the lights.
A projector flickered on.
Across the screen appeared one title.
PROJECT HARBOR
I frowned.
"I thought this was Operation Ivory."
"It is."
Ross clicked the remote.
"Operation Ivory was the investigation."
"This..."
"...was Richard Carter's private operation."
The next slide appeared.
One photograph.
A little girl.
Emily.
Age six.
Below it, a sentence written by my father.
If you're reading this, my worst fear has already come true.
I felt tears forming again.
Ross continued.
"Richard recorded over two hundred video journals."
"He instructed us not to open them unless Emily disappeared."
Grant looked up.
"So we're watching a dead man's investigation?"
Ross nodded.
"Exactly."
He pressed Play.
The screen filled with my father's face.
He looked tired.
Older than I remembered.
But his eyes were sharp.
Focused.
Determined.
He looked directly into the camera.
"If Clara is here..."
"...I'm sorry."
Those two words shattered me.
"I promised I'd never keep another secret from you after your mother died."
"I failed."
"But I believe you'll understand why."
He paused.
Then said something that made every person in the room freeze.
"Emily is not my mistake."
"She is my responsibility."
Grant frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Ross paused the video.
"We asked ourselves the same question."
He clicked ahead several pages in Richard's journal.
A DNA report appeared on the screen.
Two names.
Richard Carter
Emily Bennett
Probability of paternity:
0.00%
I blinked.
"No..."
Ross nodded slowly.
"Richard Carter was never Emily's biological father."
The room exploded with questions.
"What?"
"That's impossible!"
"Then why would he hide her?"
Ross raised a hand.
"Watch."
The video resumed.
My father took a long breath before speaking.
"Emily isn't my daughter by blood."
"But the day I held her for the first time..."
"I promised her mother that I'd protect her."
The screen faded into another image.
A smiling young woman.
Long dark hair.
Warm brown eyes.
She looked strangely familiar.
I couldn't place why.
"My name is Rebecca Hale."
The surname hit me instantly.
"Hale?"
Ross nodded.
"Keep watching."
My father's voice continued.
"Rebecca was Margaret Hale's daughter."
Every hair on my arms stood up.
Margaret.
The woman behind Operation Ivory.
Rebecca...
was her daughter.
But why would Margaret's own granddaughter be hiding from her?
Richard answered before anyone asked.
"Rebecca discovered what her mother truly was."
"She tried to expose her."
"She stole evidence."
"Then she disappeared."
Ross quietly said,
"We never found Rebecca."
My father's voice became heavier.
"The night Rebecca vanished..."
"...she left Emily with me."
"She begged me never to let Margaret find her."
The room was completely silent.
Then came the sentence none of us expected.
"Because Margaret wasn't trying to kill Rebecca."
"She was trying to claim Emily."
Grant whispered,
"Why?"
Ross didn't answer.
Instead, he pressed Play again.
Richard looked directly into the camera.
"If Margaret ever finds Emily..."
"...she gains control of something worth more than money."
I leaned forward.
"What?"
The recording ended.
Black screen.
No explanation.
Ross cursed quietly.
"It cuts off there."
"What do you mean?"
"The rest of the file is corrupted."
My father had almost revealed the truth.
Almost.
But not quite.
Just then, another FBI analyst rushed into the room carrying a laptop.
"We've got the forensic report."
Ross stood immediately.
"The drawing?"
The analyst nodded.
"It's genuine."
"And?"
"The paper is three weeks old."
"The fingerprints belong to Emily."
Ross waited.
"What else?"
The analyst hesitated.
"We found another set."
My pulse quickened.
"Who?"
He slowly turned the laptop around.
A fingerprint comparison filled the screen.
MATCH FOUND
Identity:
UNKNOWN
Database Status:
SEALED BY FEDERAL ORDER
Ross's expression changed.
"I've never seen that before."
The analyst swallowed.
"Neither have I."
"What does it mean?"
"It means..."
"...someone erased this person's identity from every public database."
Grant frowned.
"Can people do that?"
Ross answered quietly.
"Only if the government helped them."
The room fell silent.
Someone powerful enough to vanish from every record...
had been hiding with Emily.
For years.
Before anyone could speak again—
Ross's secure phone rang.
Only four people in the country had that number.
He answered instantly.
"This is Ross."
The voice on the other end spoke for less than ten seconds.
Ross's face drained of color.
"What?"
A pause.
"Are you absolutely certain?"
Another pause.
"I'll be there immediately."
He ended the call.
I stood.
"What happened?"
Ross looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Shock.
"They finished identifying Sarah Bennett."
I frowned.
"You already knew it was Sarah."
Ross slowly shook his head.
"No."
"They identified..."
"...the body."
Every heartbeat seemed to stop.
"The woman who died in that fire..."
"...wasn't Sarah Bennett."
I couldn't breathe.
"What are you saying?"
Ross spoke one sentence that changed everything.
"The woman we buried yesterday..."
May you like
"...had someone else's face."
