Chapter 4 - LOCKER 718The historic Astor Building was pitch black and freezing when Giovanni’s car pulled up to the loading dock.

With the night manager nervously trailing behind us, we descended into the basement vaults. Locker 718 clicked open easily with the brass key.
Inside sat a trove of hidden history: my father’s private leather-bound journals, the original, untampered deed to our family estate, a certified copy of his actual final will, and a massive education trust established legally in my name.
Sitting right beside the documents was a wrapped package tied with a faded blue ribbon.
Attached to the ribbon was a small greeting card. When I flipped it open, my breath hitched. The handwriting didn't belong to my father. It belonged to a woman I had been forced to believe had died in a tragic car accident when I was only five years old.
The note read: “To my dearest Willow, written for the day you are finally old enough to know why I had to leave you behind.”
Before my trembling fingers could untie the ribbon, the heavy metal door of the vault banged open. The night manager hurried back inside, breathing heavily, stammering that someone upstairs had just forced their way past the security gates and was demanding to see me immediately.

Giovanni stepped in front of me, his hand resting near his coat. "Who is it?"
The manager swallowed hard, looking directly at my face. "She says her name is Elise Vale."
