Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Debt

While Trevor was scrubbing tables in Scottsdale, his father was discovering that federal prison food offered very little in the way of negotiation.
Arthur Hayes sat in a stark visitation room at the federal correctional facility in Florence, staring through thick, reinforced glass at Julian Vance. The high-powered attorney looked tired, his custom-tailored suit slightly rumpled from navigating the endless labyrinth of asset-forfeiture hearings.
“What do you mean, the government seized the trust?” Arthur rasped into the plastic phone receiver, his knuckles white against the metal counter.
Julian sighed, adjusting his glasses. “Arthur, the forensic audit Chloe provided didn't just cover the primary accounts. It mapped out every hidden layer of the family holding corporation over the last decade. The federal judge ruled that the offshore trusts established back in 2018 were funded directly with embezzled corporate tax revenue. Legally speaking, those funds belong to the creditors and the state.”
“That money was supposed to protect my grandchildren!” Arthur slammed his palm against the glass partition, though the heavy material didn't even vibrate. “That was generational wealth!”

“It was stolen wealth,” Julian corrected flatly, his patience wearing dangerously thin. “And right now, your son is working off tips at a bistro while you’re facing fifteen years. If you want to talk about protection, you should be asking why you didn't notice your daughter-in-law was smarter than your entire board of directors combined.”
Arthur slumped back into his plastic chair, the crushing weight of his reality finally breaking through decades of aristocratic delusion. The Hayes empire hadn't just fallen; it had been systematically erased.
