Chapter 5 - The Dawn of Destruction

Nathan strode toward the main projection screen, Emma right at his heels. Arthur tapped his tablet, casting a live drone feed onto the wall.
The image showed the modest North Side residential block where Emma’s apartment building stood. But the quiet street was no longer sleeping.
Flashing yellow hazard lights cut through the predawn darkness. Three massive, yellow Caterpillar bulldozers, bearing the unmistakable green logo of Vance Enterprises, sat idling at the edge of the block, their heavy steel blades lowered menacingly toward the pavement.
"He bypassed the injunction," Arthur gasped, his face draining of color. "He’s using a midnight emergency demolition permit issued by a corrupt municipal judge. They’re moving in ahead of schedule."
"They're thirty minutes away from my front door," Emma whispered, her face turning pale. "My boys are in that building!"
Nathan didn't blink. The King of Concrete didn't panic; he calculated strike angles.
"Arthur, patch me into the municipal emergency dispatch and every major media outlet in Illinois," Nathan commanded, his voice ringing with absolute authority.
"Sir, what are you—"
"Do it now!" Nathan ordered, grabbing his suit jacket off the chair. He looked down at Emma, his eyes burning with absolute determination. "Stay here. Lock the doors."
"Like hell I'm staying here!" Emma snapped, grabbing her trench coat from the back of the chair. "Those are my sons down the hall! I am coming with you."
Nathan didn't argue. He nodded once. "Let's go."
Within ten minutes, Nathan’s private helicopter lifted off the rooftop helipad of Harrison Global Tower, cutting through the heavy morning fog over Lake Michigan, descending directly toward the North Side neighborhood like a bird of prey.
As the chopper touched down in an empty parking lot a block away from Emma’s apartment, the roar of diesel engines filled the damp morning air.
Standing in the center of the street, flanked by private security guards and municipal enforcement officers, was Victor Vance himself. He wore an expensive cashmere overcoat, holding a steaming paper cup of coffee, smiling smugly as the largest bulldozer revved its engine, its massive steel teeth hovering mere feet from the brick exterior of Emma’s building.
Nathan and Emma stepped out of the chopper's rotor wash, their coats snapping in the wind like battle flags.
"Well, well, well!" Victor shouted over the roar of the diesel engines, stepping forward with a malicious grin. "Look who decided to show up for the demolition party! Too bad you're a few million dollars short and a few minutes too late, Nathan!"
Nathan didn't stop walking. He marched straight toward Victor, his face an emotionless mask of pure granite. Emma walked right beside him, her head held high, radiating a quiet, terrifying grace.
"You're standing on private property, Victor," Nathan said, stopping three feet away from his rival.
"Not for long!" Victor laughed, gesturing toward the bulldozer operator. "Drop the blade! Clear the lot!"
The heavy steel treads of the bulldozer groaned, and the machine lurched forward.
Emma flinched instinctively, grabbing Nathan’s forearm.

Nathan didn't flinch. Instead, he pulled a small, sleek satellite phone from his pocket, pressed a single button, and spoke three words into the receiver.
"Execute Protocol Alpha."
