Chapter 3 — Someone Was Watching the Billionaire... And the First Move Had Already Been Made

Miles away, inside a luxury penthouse overlooking Central Park...

A crystal wine glass rested untouched beside an open laptop.

On the screen...

Marcus Hail was crying.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just one tear slowly sliding down the face of a man the world believed was made of steel.

The woman watching smiled.

"Finally..."

Vanessa Monroe leaned back in her leather chair.

"You're exactly where I wanted you."

The man standing beside her adjusted his expensive suit.

"You were right. The little girl got through."

Vanessa never looked away from the screen.

"I told you she would."

"You really think a child can change him?"

Vanessa's smile widened.

"I don't need her to change him."

She slowly closed the laptop.

"I only need him to trust her."

Back at Hail Manor...

No one had moved.

Marcus still held Lily's childish drawing.

The paper trembled slightly in his hand.

Rosa stood frozen near the doorway.

"I'm...I'm so sorry, Mr. Hail."

Marcus looked up.

His face had returned to its familiar calm.

But something inside his eyes had changed.

"What are you apologizing for?"

Rosa blinked.

"She entered your room."

"Yes."

"Without permission."

"Yes."

"I'll leave immediately."

Marcus quietly folded the drawing.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

"No?"

He turned toward William.

"Prepare the small breakfast room."

William hesitated.

"Sir?"

Marcus repeated himself.

"The breakfast room."

"Yes, sir."

"And..."

He glanced toward Lily.

"...set one extra place."

Silence.

No one remembered the last time Marcus had shared a meal with anyone.

For almost a year he had insisted on eating alone.

Nurses left trays outside the door.

Employees never crossed the threshold.

Even doctors often spoke to him standing several feet away.

Yet now...

He wanted breakfast.

With a three-year-old.

The kitchen erupted into whispers.

"Did you hear?"

"He invited them?"

"Impossible."

Chef Anthony removed his glasses.

"I've worked here eleven years."

"He hasn't eaten downstairs since the diagnosis."

One housemaid whispered,

"Maybe he's getting better."

Another quietly answered,

"Or maybe he's saying goodbye."

No one knew which possibility frightened them more.

Fifteen minutes later...

The breakfast room felt strangely alive.

Morning sunlight spilled across polished oak floors.

Fresh coffee filled the air.

Marcus sat quietly at one end of the table.

His wheelchair locked in place.

Across from him...

Lily happily stirred whipped cream into her hot chocolate.

She looked around with wide eyes.

"Your house is too big."

Marcus almost smiled.

"You think so?"

She nodded seriously.

"If I lived here..."

She pointed toward the long hallway.

"...I'd get lost every day."

Marcus looked around the enormous room.

For the first time...

He saw it through someone else's eyes.

The mansion wasn't beautiful.

It was empty.

Far too empty.

Rosa barely touched her food.

She expected security to escort her out at any moment.

Instead...

Marcus surprised her again.

"How long have you worked here?"

"Three years."

"And you've never spoken more than three sentences to me."

She lowered her eyes.

"You didn't seem to want conversation."

Marcus quietly nodded.

"You're right."

Lily interrupted.

"My mama talks a lot."

Rosa blushed.

"Lily..."

Marcus chuckled.

A tiny sound.

Barely audible.

But every employee serving breakfast heard it.

William nearly dropped the coffee pot.

Chef Anthony peeked through the kitchen door.

Did...

Did Mr. Hail just laugh?

After breakfast...

Marcus watched Lily coloring at the far end of the room.

He finally asked the question that had been bothering him.

"Where's her father?"

Rosa became very still.

"He passed away."

Marcus immediately regretted asking.

"I'm sorry."

"He died before Lily learned to say 'Daddy.'"

The room grew quiet again.

Marcus understood loss.

Not the same kind.

But close enough.

He looked toward Lily.

She was carefully drawing another picture.

A family.

Three smiling stick figures.

One very tiny rabbit.

One enormous yellow sun.

Children always drew the world they wished existed.

Meanwhile...

Daniel Reeves entered Marcus's private office carrying a tablet.

"Sir..."

Marcus looked up.

"What is it?"

"I found something strange."

He placed the tablet on the desk.

Security footage appeared.

The hallway outside Marcus's bedroom.

Lily walking toward the forbidden door.

Marcus frowned.

"I know what happened."

Daniel shook his head.

"No, sir."

He zoomed farther back.

Thirty seconds before Lily appeared...

A woman wearing a gray maintenance uniform walked down the hallway.

She looked directly into one security camera.

Then...

She disappeared into a blind spot.

Marcus frowned.

"Who is she?"

"We checked."

Daniel's voice became tense.

"No maintenance workers were scheduled yesterday."

Marcus looked again.

The woman's face remained hidden beneath a baseball cap.

"What happened after that?"

Daniel played the recording.

Ten seconds later...

The battery inside Marcus's emergency call button suddenly failed.

Then...

The hallway camera outside the bedroom froze for exactly twelve seconds.

Just enough time...

For Lily to enter unnoticed.

Marcus's expression hardened.

"That's impossible."

Daniel swallowed.

"It gets worse."

He opened another video.

This time...

The footage came from the security room itself.

Exactly two minutes before Lily disappeared...

Every monitor inside the mansion briefly flickered.

Only once.

Less than one second.

Too fast for anyone to notice.

Except the system automatically logged it.

Someone had hacked the mansion.

Professionally.

Marcus's face turned cold.

The businessman was back.

"Whoever entered this house..."

He looked directly at Daniel.

"...wasn't after money."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"I agree."

"They were after me."

Across the city...

Vanessa Monroe stood on the balcony of her penthouse.

The morning newspapers praised Marcus Hail's newest charitable donation.

She laughed.

"He still wants the world to think he's in control."

Her phone buzzed.

One message appeared.

TARGET HAS STARTED TRUSTING THE CHILD.

Vanessa typed only three words.

Proceed to Phase Two.

She pressed send.

Then looked toward the Manhattan skyline.

"You took everything from me, Marcus."

"You just don't remember it yet."

Back at Hail Manor...

Lily climbed into Marcus's lap without asking.

Every employee gasped.

Even Rosa stood up.

"Lily!"

Marcus quietly raised one hand.

"It's alright."

The little girl wrapped her tiny arms around his neck.

She whispered softly into his ear.

"You don't have to be lonely anymore."

Marcus closed his eyes.

He hadn't been hugged in almost a year.

Not since the day his illness became public.

He slowly placed one trembling hand on the little girl's back.

For the first time in months...

The mansion no longer felt cold.

But outside the front gate...

A black SUV had already parked across the street.

Inside...

A man lifted a professional camera with a long telephoto lens.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Every photograph captured the same impossible scene.

The billionaire.

The maid.

The little girl.

Together.

The man smiled before making a phone call.

"I've got the pictures."

A woman's voice answered immediately.

"Excellent."

"Should I send them to the tabloids?"

There was a brief silence.

Then she replied,

"No."

"Send them to Marcus's Board of Directors first."
