CHAPTER 2 The Letter Her Grandfather Left Behind… And the Secret That Made Her Parents Turn White

The envelope felt strangely heavy.
Not because of the paper inside...
But because everyone in the room was staring at it as though it were a ticking bomb.
Valeria could hear nothing except her own heartbeat.
Her fingers hesitated over the seal.
Across the room, Arturo suddenly took one step forward.
"Don't open that."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Attorney Elena immediately stepped between them.
"I wouldn't recommend another step, Mr. Castañeda."
Arturo forced a smile.
"I'm simply trying to protect my daughter."
"No," Elena replied quietly.
"You're trying to protect yourself."
The room went completely silent.
Even Sebastián looked confused.
Valeria slowly broke the wax seal.
Inside were three folded pages, written entirely in her grandfather's familiar handwriting.
A small brass key slipped onto the marble floor.
It spun twice before coming to a stop.
Everyone stared at it.
Valeria picked it up with trembling fingers.
"What is this?"
Elena answered softly.
Valeria unfolded the first page.
At the top were only five words.
My Dearest Granddaughter, Valeria.
Her vision blurred instantly.
She hadn't heard her grandfather's voice in seven months.
Yet every word brought him back.
If you are reading this...
...it means I was right.
They finally showed you who they really are.
Valeria stopped breathing.
She slowly looked toward her parents.
Neither of them moved.
She continued reading.
If your parents celebrated your eighteenth birthday with genuine joy...
Burn this letter.
Forget everything I suspected.
Live happily with your family.
But if they become angry because you protected your inheritance...
Then you must read every single word that follows.
Arturo's face lost all color.
"That's enough."
Valeria ignored him.
For years, I pretended not to notice what was happening inside this family.
Not because I was blind...
But because I needed proof.
Valeria frowned.
Proof?
Proof of what?
Your father believes he is clever.
Your mother believes appearances erase sins.
Your brother believes money solves everything.
They are all wrong.
Sebastián shifted uneasily.
"What kind of nonsense is this?"
Elena looked directly at him.
"Keep listening."
Valeria continued.
Six years ago...
I hired private investigators.
The room froze.
Beatriz suddenly stood.
"What?"
Valeria kept reading.
I wanted to know why every conversation in this house somehow returned to money whenever my name was mentioned.
The answers frightened me.
Arturo slammed his palm against the table.
"This is ridiculous."
"No," Elena answered.
"This is documented."
Valeria turned the page.
Attached beneath it was a photograph.
Her hands began shaking.
The picture showed Arturo sitting inside an expensive restaurant.
Across from him sat two unfamiliar men in suits.
One of them slid a thick folder across the table.
Written across the front...
PERSONAL GUARANTEE
Another photograph.
Arturo shaking hands.
Another.
Stacks of documents.
Another.
A bank building.
Another.
A luxury office tower.
"What is this?" Valeria whispered.
Elena answered.
"Financial surveillance."
She kept reading.
Three years ago your father secretly guaranteed several business loans using assets he did not actually own.
When those investments failed...
He needed another source of capital.
Valeria looked slowly toward Arturo.
His forehead glistened with sweat.
"You hired people to spy on me?" he snapped.
"No," Elena corrected him.
"Your father hired licensed investigators after discovering irregular financial activity."
Valeria continued.
At first I believed Arturo simply made poor business decisions.
Then I discovered something worse.
Her stomach tightened.
The loans were never intended to save the company.
They were intended to save his reputation.
Silence.
Complete silence.
Valeria remembered something.
Three years earlier...
Her father had suddenly purchased another vacation property.
A new yacht.
A luxury sports car.
He claimed business had never been better.
Now...
Nothing made sense.
She turned another page.
More photographs.
More documents.
More dates.
Each one matched years her father insisted the family was "financially stronger than ever."
He had lied.
To everyone.
Including them.
Sebastián looked at Arturo.
"Dad..."
Arturo avoided his eyes.
Valeria reached another paragraph.
This time...
Her breathing stopped.
The inheritance was never my biggest concern.
You were.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
I realized something your parents never understood.
Money can always be earned again.
A person's freedom cannot.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
Your eighteenth birthday was not the date they were waiting for.
It was the deadline their creditors were waiting for.
Valeria felt dizzy.
"What?"
Elena slowly nodded.
"It's true."
Arturo exploded.
"Enough!"
He lunged toward the papers.
Before he could reach them, Elena stepped in front of him.
Two security officers entered through the open doorway.
Arturo froze.
Valeria looked at Elena in shock.
"You knew this might happen?"
"I hoped it wouldn't."
The second security officer quietly closed the front door.
No one was leaving.
Valeria returned to the letter.
If they attempted to force you out of the house...
It means they have run out of options.
Which also means you are no longer safe there.
She looked around the mansion.
The home where she had spent her entire childhood.
Suddenly...
It no longer felt like home.
It felt like a carefully decorated trap.
The next page contained only one sentence.
Go immediately to Apartment 1804.
Valeria frowned.
Apartment?
She looked at Elena.
"You already rented me an apartment."
Elena smiled gently.
"Not that apartment."
Valeria held up the brass key.
"This belongs there?"
"Yes."
"What is inside?"
Elena hesitated.
"For years..."
"Your grandfather prepared something."
Arturo suddenly shouted,
"You are not taking her anywhere!"
Elena calmly reached into her briefcase again.
This time she removed another sealed envelope.
Much thicker.
Across the front were bold black letters.
TO BE OPENED ONLY IF ARTURO CASTAÑEDA ATTEMPTS TO INTERFERE.
Arturo's face turned gray.
Beatriz grabbed the edge of her chair to keep herself from falling.
Sebastián stared at his father.
"Dad..."
"...how many letters did Grandpa leave?"
Arturo didn't answer.
Because...
He didn't know.
Neither did anyone else.
Valeria slowly picked up her suitcases.
No one tried to stop her.
Not anymore.
As she walked toward the front door, she looked back one last time.
Her father stood motionless.
Her mother avoided her eyes.
Her brother looked completely lost.
The perfect family portrait had finally shattered.
Outside, a black SUV waited with its engine running.
As Elena placed the luggage inside, Valeria quietly asked,
"Tell me the truth."
"Were my grandfather's suspicions only about the money?"
Elena looked at her for several long seconds.
Then she answered with words that made Valeria's blood run cold.
"No."
"The money was only the beginning."
Valeria frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Elena closed the car door.
Then whispered:
"Your grandfather believed someone in your family was responsible for a death that was officially ruled an accident."
Valeria froze.
"What...?"
Elena nodded.
"And if he was right..."
"...everything you thought you knew about your family is about to collapse."
The SUV slowly pulled away from the mansion.
Behind them...
Arturo watched through the front window without moving.
Then, for the first time in years...
He picked up his phone and called someone.
Only four words came out of his mouth.
"She's reading everything now."
A man's unfamiliar voice answered from the other end.
"So..."
May you like
"...there's no turning back."
