CHAPTER 1 â The Funeral That Should Never Have Happened

Nobody expected the funeral to become a crime scene.
The old stone church was silent except for muffled sobs. Sunlight poured through the stained-glass windows, illuminating the polished mahogany coffin resting before the altar. White lilies surrounded it, their sweet fragrance unable to hide the smell of grief.
Everyone believed Daniel Carter was dead.
Everyone...
...except one child.
Eight-year-old Ethan Carter stood frozen in the front pew, clutching the sleeve of his black jacket. His eyes never left the coffin. While the adults cried and exchanged condolences, Ethan looked terrifiedâas if he was waiting for something no one else could see.
Beside him sat his grandmother, Margaret, whose trembling hands gripped a rosary so tightly her knuckles had turned white.
"My son is finally at peace," she whispered.
Ethan slowly shook his head.
"No..."
Margaret looked down.
"What did you say, sweetheart?"
The boy swallowed hard.
"Dad isn't dead."
Her heart skipped a beat.
Before she could answer, the church doors opened.
A tall man in a dark suit entered, removing his sunglasses with practiced sadness. It was Victor Hale, Daniel's longtime business partner.
He hugged Margaret.
"I'm so sorry for your loss."
His voice sounded perfect.
Too perfect.
Ethan stepped behind his grandmother.
He hated Victor.
Not because Victor had ever hurt him...
But because, two nights before his father "died," Ethan had heard something.
He had been unable to sleep and wandered downstairs for water.
His father's office door was slightly open.
Inside, Daniel spoke in a voice Ethan had never heard before.
"If anything happens to me... don't trust Victor."
Then silence.
A loud crash.
Footsteps.
And someone slammed the office door shut.
The next morning...
Daniel's car had supposedly plunged off a cliff.
The police found only burned remains.
The case was closed within forty-eight hours.
Everyone called it a tragic accident.
Everyone except Ethan.
Back in the church, the priest began the final prayer.
"We now return Daniel Carter to God's eternal care..."
Two pallbearers stepped forward.
The coffin lid was about to be sealed forever.
Suddenlyâ
"STOP!"
Ethan's scream echoed through the church.
Every head turned.
Tears streamed down his face.
"Please!"
"Don't bury my dad!"
"He's still alive!"
The congregation gasped.
Margaret knelt beside him.
"Ethan..."
The boy pointed directly at the coffin.
"I heard him."
"I heard Daddy knocking."
Silence.
No one moved.
Some guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.
Others assumed grief had overwhelmed the child.
Victor slowly walked toward Ethan and crouched beside him.
His smile looked gentle.
But his eyes were cold.
"It's okay, buddy."
"Sometimes our minds hear things when we're hurting."
Ethan stared straight into Victor's face.
Then whispered words only Victor could hear.
"I know what you did."
For one brief second...
Victor's smile disappeared.
His pupils widened.
His jaw tightened.
Only for a second.
Then he smiled again.
The priest cleared his throat, urging the ceremony to continue.
The coffin bearers reached for the handles once more.
And then...
Bang.
Everyone froze.
Another sound.
Bang... Bang... Bang...
It wasn't coming from the church doors.
It wasn't thunder.
It was coming...
From inside the coffin.
The lilies trembled.
Margaret covered her mouth.
One woman fainted.
The priest dropped his Bible.
Victor's face turned pale.
For the first time that morning...
He looked genuinely afraid.
The knocking stopped.
Then a faint voice...
Barely louder than a whisper...
"...Help..."
The church erupted into chaos.
And Victor Hale realized that the man he had buried...
May you like
might still be alive.
To be continued...
