CHAPTER 5: THE FAMILY SECRET THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Elena couldn’t breathe.

The document in her hands felt heavier than anything she had ever held.

Not because it was made of paper.

But because of what it represented.

A secret.

A secret hidden for twenty-eight years.

A secret her father had taken to his grave.

A secret that could destroy everything she believed about her own family.

The old office remained silent.

Only the sound of the rain hitting the windows could be heard.

Teresa watched Elena’s face lose its color.

“Elena…”

She stepped closer.

“What does it say?”

But Elena couldn’t answer.

Her eyes remained fixed on the first page.

The words were impossible to accept.

PATERNITY TEST RESULTS

Probability of biological relationship: 99.99%

Below it was a name.

A name that made her hands tremble.

Adrián Montiel.

“No…”

Elena whispered.

Teresa looked confused.

“What?”

Elena slowly lifted her eyes.

“This makes no sense.”

She turned the document around.

Teresa read it.

And her expression changed instantly.

Because she understood.

The man who had betrayed Elena…

The man who tried to steal her company…

Was connected to her family in a way nobody imagined.

“Adrián is…”

Elena couldn’t finish the sentence.

Teresa took a deep breath.

“Your father’s son?”

The room became painfully quiet.

Memories started rushing back.

The first time Elena met Adrián.

The way he looked at old Novatek documents.

The way he was strangely interested in her father’s history.

The way he always asked questions about the company’s ownership.

She thought it was ambition.

She thought it was curiosity.

But now…

Maybe there was another reason.

Elena opened the second document.

This time, it was a letter.

Again, written by her father.

Elena,

If you have discovered this folder, then you know the truth I was afraid to reveal.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Before I met your mother, there was someone else in my life. Her name was Isabel Montiel.

Elena stopped.

The surname.

Montiel.

The same surname as Adrián.

I was young. I made mistakes. I abandoned someone who deserved better.

Years later, I discovered that Isabel had a son. A son who carried my blood.

Elena covered her mouth.

Her father had another child.

And that child was Adrián.

Teresa sat down slowly.

“Your father knew?”

Elena nodded.

“He knew Adrián was his son.”

“Then why didn’t he tell you?”

Elena continued reading.

The answer was below.

Because I was afraid, Elena.

Not because he was my son.

But because I discovered what he wanted.

Elena’s eyes moved faster.

Adrián did not come into your life by coincidence.

He knew who you were before you knew him.

The room suddenly felt colder.

Elena remembered.

When they met, Adrián had seemed too perfect.

Too prepared.

He knew exactly what to say.

Exactly how to make her trust him.

She had believed she found love.

But maybe…

She had been chosen.

A knock interrupted them.

Both women turned.

The door opened.

A security officer stood there.

“Mrs. Alcázar.”

Elena looked at him.

“Yes?”

“We found something in Mr. Montiel’s office.”

“What?”

The officer hesitated.

“A hidden safe.”

Minutes later, Elena stood inside Adrián’s office.

The same office where he had laughed with Renata.

The same place where he planned her destruction.

But now she saw everything differently.

The expensive furniture.

The luxury decorations.

The awards on the wall.

All of it.

A performance.

A carefully created image.

The security team opened the hidden safe.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Old files.

Elena picked up the first photograph.

Her heart stopped.

It showed Adrián as a child.

Standing beside a woman.

Isabel Montiel.

And behind them…

Was Julián Alcázar.

Her father.

But there was something else.

A second photograph.

One that made Elena’s blood run cold.

It showed Adrián meeting someone months before their wedding.

Someone she knew.

Someone she trusted.

The person standing across from him was:

Verónica Salas.

Teresa looked at the picture.

“So they knew each other before?”

Elena nodded slowly.

“They planned everything.”

The betrayal was much bigger than she imagined.

Adrián didn’t meet her by chance.

He entered her life with a mission.

Gain her trust.

Marry her.

Control Novatek.

Then Elena found one final document.

A contract.

Her hands froze.

Because the title read:

NOVATEK ACQUISITION STRATEGY

Date:

Six months before Elena and Adrián’s wedding.

The first page contained Adrián’s signature.

But the second signature shocked her.

Because it belonged to someone else.

Someone who had always acted like her protector.

Someone who had comforted her after her father’s death.

Someone who knew every detail of the Alcázar family.

Elena stared at the signature.

Her eyes filled with disbelief.

“Teresa…”

“What?”

Elena handed her the document.

Teresa read it.

And immediately stepped back.

“No…”

Her voice cracked.

“No, that’s impossible.”

Because the person who signed the agreement with Adrián…

The person who helped design the plan to take over Novatek…

Was not Verónica.

Was not Renata.

Was not a business enemy.

It was someone even closer.

Someone Elena had trusted more than anyone.

Julián Alcázar’s lawyer.

The man who had handled her father’s entire inheritance.

The man who prepared her ownership documents.

The man who supposedly protected her family legacy.

Elena looked at the contract again.

Then she noticed something.

A handwritten note at the bottom.

A message from her father.

One sentence.

One warning.

The final piece of the puzzle.

“Elena, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

Because now she understood.

Her father wasn’t only warning her about Adrián.

He was warning her about everyone.

Suddenly, Teresa’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed.

“What happened?”

A few seconds later, she looked at Elena.

“Elena…”

“What?”

“Adrián was released.”

Elena frowned.

“How?”

Teresa swallowed.

“Someone paid his bail.”

“Who?”

Teresa looked at her.

“The person who paid for his release…”

She paused.

“…was someone using your father’s old company account.”

Elena’s heart sank.

Because that meant one thing.

The enemy was still inside.

Someone had access to her father’s secrets.

Someone had been watching her investigation.

And someone was willing to do anything to stop the truth from coming out.

Elena walked to the window and looked down at Novatek’s headquarters.

The company her father built.

The company she almost lost.

The company everyone wanted.

Then she whispered:

“Adrián wasn’t trying to steal my company.”

Teresa looked at her.

“Then what was he trying to do?”

Elena turned around.

Her eyes were no longer filled with sadness.

Only determination.

“He was trying to erase my family.”

At that exact moment…

Her phone received a message.

Unknown number.

One photo.

A picture taken outside Novatek.

A person standing near the entrance.

Someone Elena thought was gone forever.

Below the image were six words:

May you like

“Your father’s killer has returned.”
