Chapter 5 – The Truth Her Mother Never Told

Three days after Emiliano's successful transplant, life seemed to slow down.
His doctors were encouraged by the early signs.
His fever had disappeared.
His blood counts were beginning to improve.
For the first time in months, Daniel's widow smiled without forcing it.
Sergio finally slept through an entire night.
And Mariana...
Mariana wanted nothing more than to leave the past behind.
She believed the worst was finally over.
She was wrong.
At exactly 9:18 a.m., the doorbell rang.
A delivery driver stood outside holding a plain brown envelope.
"There isn't a sender's name," he said. "Just your address."
Mariana signed for it and closed the door.
The package was surprisingly heavy.
Inside she found three items.
A flash drive.
Several photocopied hospital records.
And a handwritten note.
Only one sentence appeared on the page.
"Ask your mother why she never came back for the second baby."
Mariana read the sentence again.
Then again.
The second baby?
Her hands began to tremble.
That evening, she drove to her childhood home.
Her mother, Elena, answered the door with a warm smile.
"You should have called first."
Mariana didn't smile back.
She placed the envelope on the kitchen table.
"I need answers."
Elena looked at the papers.
The color drained from her face.
"Where did you get these?"
"So they're real?"
Elena didn't answer.
Instead, she slowly sat down.
For nearly a minute, neither woman spoke.
Finally, Elena whispered,
"I always knew this day would come."
Mariana's heart pounded.
"Tell me about the note."
Her mother closed her eyes.
"It isn't completely true."
"Then tell me the part that is."
A tear rolled down Elena's cheek.
"The night you were born..."
"...you weren't the only baby I held."
Mariana felt the room spin.
"What does that mean?"
Elena reached into an old cabinet and removed a small photo album.
Between its pages was a faded hospital photograph.
A young Elena lay in bed, exhausted but smiling.
In her arms...
were two newborn babies.
"They told me one of them wasn't breathing," Elena whispered.
"They rushed the baby away before I could even see clearly."
"I was unconscious for hours after that."
"When I woke up..."
"...they placed only you in my arms."
Mariana stared at the photograph.
"There were twins?"
Elena nodded through tears.
"I gave birth to twins."
The words echoed through the room.
Twins.
Not one child.
Two.
"But..."
Mariana whispered.
"The note says you never came back."
"I did come back."
"I searched for years."
"No one would answer my questions."
"They told me my second baby had died."
She opened a drawer and removed dozens of old letters.
Every one of them had been sent to hospitals, government offices, or adoption agencies.
Most had never received a reply.
Others simply read:
No records available.
"I never stopped looking," Elena said.
"Not for one day."
Mariana's eyes filled with tears.
The anonymous note had twisted the truth.
Her mother hadn't abandoned a child.
She had spent decades searching for one.
Just then, Mariana remembered the flash drive.
She plugged it into her laptop.
A single video file appeared.
No title.
No date.
She pressed play.
The image was grainy, as though it had been recorded years earlier.
An elderly man sat in a dimly lit room.
Mariana recognized him instantly.
Sergio's late father.
He looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this," he began,
"then I no longer have the courage to tell you myself."
Mariana held her breath.
"There was no baby switch."
Her eyes widened.
"The hospital fire was real."
"But it wasn't what separated the children."
The old man paused, fighting tears.
"Someone took one of the twins."
The room seemed to freeze.
"They weren't lost by accident."
"They were stolen."
Mariana's pulse raced.
"Who?" she whispered at the screen.
The old man continued.
"I discovered the truth years later."
"I wanted to go to the police."
"But the people involved were powerful."
"They threatened our family."
"They said more children would disappear if I spoke."
He looked down for several seconds.
"I was a coward."
"I'm sorry."
The recording suddenly ended.
No names.
No explanation.
Just silence.
Mariana and her mother looked at each other in disbelief.
"If this is true..."
Mariana whispered,
"...my twin could still be alive."
Before Elena could answer, Mariana's phone rang.
It was the hospital.
Her heart nearly stopped.
She answered immediately.
"Hello?"
A nurse's voice came through the line.
"Mrs. Flores, don't panic."
"But someone has been asking questions about Emiliano."
Mariana frowned.
"What kind of questions?"
"They wanted to know whether his transplant had been successful."
"Who was it?"
"We don't know."
"They never gave a name."
The nurse hesitated before adding,
"But they knew details that were never made public."
Mariana slowly lowered the phone.
Someone had been watching.
Someone knew about Emiliano.
Someone knew about her.
And if the video was telling the truth...
that same person might also know exactly what happened to the missing twin twenty-eight years ago.
Far away, in the parking lot across from the hospital, a man lowered a pair of binoculars.
He made a brief phone call.
"It's confirmed," he said.
"The woman has started asking questions."
A calm voice answered from the other end.
"Then don't let her discover who the second child became."
The call disconnected.
Mariana had just uncovered the first piece of a mystery that had been buried for nearly three decades.
She had no idea that the next clue would come from someone she had trusted her entire life.
