Chapter 6 - The Crumoling EmpireBy February, the illusion had completely shattered beyond repair.

The insurance company formally denied my sister’s claim and referred the case to the county prosecutor for felony insurance fraud. Faced with overwhelming evidence, public humiliation, and the impending collapse of his business reputation, my brother-in-law’s business partners forced him out of the car dealerships.

Their sprawling house outside Columbus—the curved driveway, the matching wreaths, the immaculate holiday showcases—was suddenly weighed down by a mountain of debt they could no longer service. A giant, yellow ‘FOR SALE’ sign appeared on the front lawn.

The high-society friends who had once fawned over her catered dinner parties vanished overnight. In elite circles, scandal was contagious, and nobody wanted to be associated with a couple facing criminal fraud charges.

My mother finally called me, her tone completely broken, stripped of all its usual demands for peacekeeping and compliance.

“She’s packing her boxes,” my mother whispered, sitting alone in her kitchen. “They’re moving into a small rental apartment across town. Her husband won’t even look at her. And she... she just sits in the empty living room all day staring at the wall.”

“I’m sorry it’s hard for you, Mom,” I replied gently.

“She keeps saying it’s all your fault,” my mother added, her voice cracking. “She says if you had just stayed quiet, if you had just accepted it like you always did...”

“I stopped being that person the night she threw my son to the floor, Mom. You should try letting go of her delusions, too. It’s much lighter on this side.”
