CHAPTER 1 The Fall That Changed Everything

"Please… my baby…"
Valeria's trembling voice barely rose above a whisper.
She lay at the bottom of the grand staircase, her white maternity dress slowly turning crimson beneath her. Every breath felt like a knife piercing her chest. The nursery she had lovingly prepared just hours before seemed impossibly far away.
And standing above her was Doña Graciela Montes.
Perfect hair.
Pearl earrings.
An expression colder than marble.
For several seconds, she simply stared.
No panic.
No fear.
No compassion.
Then she descended one step.
And another.
Until she stood beside her daughter-in-law.
Valeria reached out with shaking fingers.
"Please… call an ambulance."
Graciela looked down at her hand as though it belonged to a stranger.
"You should have listened to me from the beginning."
A wave of terror swept through Valeria.
The baby hadn't moved in nearly a minute.
Not one kick.
Not one flutter.
Her heart pounded.
"No… please… my daughter…"
Graciela finally knelt beside her.
But instead of helping, she leaned close and whispered:
"You never deserved to carry the Montes name."
The words pierced deeper than the pain in her body.
"What… are you saying?"
The older woman smiled.
"A woman like you should have understood her place."
Valeria's vision blurred.
She remembered the first day she met Santiago's family.
Three years earlier.
She had been working at a small architectural firm in Mexico City. She wasn't rich. She didn't come from old money. She had grown up in a tiny apartment in Iztapalapa with her mother, a schoolteacher, and her younger brother.
The Montes family, however, lived in a mansion in Las Lomas.
Old money.
Political connections.
Business empires.
The kind of family that appeared in magazines.
From the moment Graciela shook her hand, Valeria knew she was unwelcome.
"How charming," she had said with a smile that never reached her eyes. "Santiago usually has... different tastes."
Different.
Meaning wealthier.
Meaning worthy.
Over the years, every family gathering became another battlefield.
The way Valeria dressed.
The way she spoke.
The neighborhood where she grew up.
Everything became ammunition.
Yet Santiago always insisted his mother would eventually accept her.
"She just needs time."
But time changed nothing.
Especially after the pregnancy.
Because once Graciela learned the baby was a girl, something inside her shifted.
At first, Valeria thought it was happiness.
She was wrong.
It became obsession.
The older woman suddenly insisted on choosing the baby's name.
Decorating the nursery.
Picking her school.
Even deciding where she would live.
She spoke of the child as if she already belonged to her.
And recently…
She had begun saying strange things.
Things that now returned to Valeria's mind like fragments of a nightmare.
"If something happened to you, the baby would still be a Montes."
"The important thing is blood."
"A child can grow up perfectly fine without her mother."
At the time, Valeria had ignored those comments.
Now, lying in her own blood, they terrified her.
She looked at Graciela.
"You… planned this?"
The older woman's face remained expressionless.
"You fell."
"You pushed me—"
"No."
Her voice was calm.
"You lost your balance."
Valeria's breathing became shallow.
"No…"
"People have accidents every day."
The words sent ice through her veins.
A terrible realization slowly formed in her mind.
This woman wasn't shocked.
She wasn't scared.
She had already imagined this moment.
Perhaps many times.
Perhaps she had even been waiting for it.
Suddenly, pain exploded in Valeria's abdomen.
She screamed.
A warm liquid spread beneath her.
Graciela looked at the blood.
And for the first time…
She seemed nervous.
She pulled out her phone.
Valeria's eyes filled with hope.
But instead of dialing emergency services, Graciela called someone else.
"Come immediately," she said quietly.
A male voice answered.
"What happened?"
"There's been an accident."
Silence.
Then:
"Is she alive?"
Valeria froze.
She knew that voice.
Her blood turned cold.
No.
No, it couldn't be.
"She's still breathing," Graciela replied.
The man exhaled slowly.
"I'll be there in ten minutes."
The call ended.
Valeria stared at her mother-in-law.
"Who… was that?"
Graciela said nothing.
"Who was it?!"
The older woman looked directly into her eyes.
Then she smiled.
"A person who understands what's best for this family."
Tears streamed down Valeria's cheeks.
She reached for her phone, but it had fallen several feet away.
Her fingers couldn't reach it.
She was trapped.
Alone.
Bleeding.
And the person coming to the house…
Wanted to know whether she was alive.
A sudden sound echoed from outside.
A car engine.
Then another.
Someone had arrived.
Graciela looked toward the front door.
"Perfect timing."
Footsteps entered the house.
Heavy.
Quick.
A man appeared in the hallway.
Valeria looked up.
And her entire world shattered.
Because it wasn't Santiago.
It was his older brother.
Alejandro Montes.
The same man who had hated her from the day she married into the family.
The same man who had once told her:
"Some people enter this family through the front door… and others should leave through the back."
He stared at the blood on the floor.
Then at Valeria.
And his face went pale.
"What happened?"
"You know exactly what happened," Graciela replied.
Alejandro looked horrified.
"No… Mother… not like this."
Valeria's heart nearly stopped.
Not like this?
What did that mean?
What had they planned?
Suddenly, Alejandro noticed her open eyes.
"She's conscious."
Fear crossed Graciela's face.
"She won't remember anything."
"I heard everything," Valeria whispered.
Silence filled the house.
For several seconds nobody moved.
Then Alejandro slowly looked at his mother.
And asked the question that changed everything:
"Did you tell her… the truth about the baby?"
The baby.
The truth.
Valeria's heart pounded.
"What truth?"
Neither of them answered.
"What truth?!" she screamed.
Alejandro looked devastated.
Graciela closed her eyes.
And finally said:
"Because that child… was never supposed to be yours."
At that exact moment—
A tiny kick came from inside Valeria's belly.
The baby was alive.
And whatever terrible secret the Montes family had been hiding…
May you like
Was about to destroy them all.
