CHAPTER 2 – The Necklace Was Never the Real Target

The elevator doors opened with a soft chime.
Stella didn't move.
Inside Room 603, laughter continued.
Someone uncorked a bottle of champagne.
Glasses clinked together.
Then Chloe's voice drifted through the wall.
"You really think she'll believe the investor dinner?"
Adrian chuckled.
"She always believes me."
The words landed harder than any confession.
Not because he admitted sleeping with another woman.
But because he admitted something much crueler.
He believed Stella's trust had become a weapon he could use against her.
She slowly stepped backward until she disappeared from the camera's view.
No screaming.
No dramatic confrontation.
No pounding on the hotel door.
For ten years, she had imagined that if Adrian ever betrayed her, she would storm into the room, throw the engagement ring in his face, and walk away.
Reality was different.
Reality was terrifyingly quiet.
Back inside her car, Stella sat in complete silence.
Her hands rested on the steering wheel, but she couldn't make herself start the engine.
Instead, she opened the hotel app on her phone.
The Whitcomb Hotel proudly advertised its security standards.
Every hallway.
Every elevator.
Every entrance.
Recorded twenty-four hours a day.
Recordings stored for ninety days.
She read the sentence three times.
Then she took a screenshot.
Something inside her shifted.
If Adrian wanted to lie...
She would let him.
People told the truth far more often when they believed no one was collecting evidence.
The next morning Adrian arrived home carrying flowers.
White lilies.
Her mother's favorite.
He smiled exactly the way he always smiled after disappointing her.
"I'm sorry about last night."
She looked at the bouquet.
"You were working?"
He nodded without hesitation.
"The investors from Singapore delayed dinner."
"What hotel?"
"The Carlton."
Not even the correct hotel.
He lied so naturally it almost impressed her.
She simply smiled.
"I understand."
For the first time in their relationship...
She didn't argue.
Didn't question him.
Didn't cry.
Adrian looked relieved.
He kissed her forehead.
"I knew you'd trust me."
She smiled again.
"I always have."
He walked upstairs without realizing Stella had quietly switched on the voice recorder in her pocket before he entered the room.
Every lie.
Every contradiction.
Every detail.
Now had a timestamp.
That afternoon Stella visited Blackwood Holdings for the first time in nearly a month.
The receptionist greeted her warmly.
"Mrs. Blackwood."
Stella politely corrected her.
"Not yet."
The receptionist laughed awkwardly.
"Everyone already calls you that."
Do they?
Stella wondered.
Or had they started calling someone else that instead?
She stepped toward Adrian's executive floor.
Employees immediately became uncomfortable.
Conversations stopped.
People avoided eye contact.
One assistant accidentally dropped an entire stack of files.
The silence told Stella more than words ever could.
People weren't shocked to see her.
They were nervous.
As if they feared she might discover something.
Chloe's office door stood half open.
Inside, Chloe was humming while organizing files.
She looked up with theatrical surprise.
"Oh! Stella."
"What a nice surprise."
Stella smiled pleasantly.
"I was nearby."
Chloe stood.
"You should've called first."
"So should Adrian."
For half a second...
Chloe's smile disappeared.
Then it returned even brighter.
"He works so hard."
"I'm sure he does."
Stella's eyes slowly moved across the office.
Designer handbag.
Fresh roses.
Luxury perfume.
Diamond earrings.
Expensive shoes.
An executive assistant's salary didn't explain any of it.
Then Stella noticed something far more disturbing.
A jewelry display stand beside the window.
Empty.
Except for one familiar velvet box.
Dark blue.
The exact one that belonged in Adrian's safe.
Her heartbeat slowed.
Not faster.
Slower.
Dangerously calm.
"I've been meaning to thank you," Chloe suddenly said.
"For what?"
"For letting Adrian borrow the necklace."
Stella looked directly into her eyes.
"My mother's necklace?"
"Yes."
"He said you didn't mind."
Every word sounded carefully rehearsed.
"He told me it was just for a company event."
Stella tilted her head.
"Interesting."
Chloe nodded innocently.
"I gave it back already."
Another lie.
Stella knew the necklace was still around Chloe's neck the previous night.
She had seen it disappear beneath Chloe's coat before entering Room 603.
Now Chloe had unknowingly created another contradiction.
Another piece of evidence.
That evening Stella stopped at the family estate.
Lady Evelyn Blackwood was hosting another charity committee meeting.
The elegant sixty-eight-year-old greeted Stella with her usual reserved smile.
"You've been avoiding us."
"I've been busy."
Evelyn poured tea.
"Wedding stress?"
Stella hesitated.
Then quietly asked,
"Has Adrian mentioned postponing the wedding?"
Evelyn looked genuinely confused.
"Postponing?"
"No."
"In fact..."
She frowned.
"He's been pushing to move it earlier."
Earlier?
Why?
Their wedding had already been scheduled for six months later.
Why rush now?
Something wasn't right.
As Stella prepared to leave, she passed Adrian's father, Charles Blackwood, in the study.
Unlike his wife, Charles rarely interfered in family matters.
He stopped her.
"Everything alright?"
She forced a smile.
"I'm fine."
He studied her for a long moment.
Then reached into his desk drawer.
"I found this yesterday."
He handed her a folded medical invoice.
"It was accidentally delivered here."
The document wasn't addressed to Adrian.
It was addressed to...
Miss Chloe Tate.
Department:
Obstetrics.
Estimated Due Date:
Nine Weeks Pregnant.
Stella stared at the paper.
Charles frowned.
"I assumed it belonged to one of Adrian's employees."
Then he lowered his voice.
"But something about it felt... strange."
Stella carefully folded the document.
"May I keep this?"
Charles nodded.
"Of course."
Driving home, Stella's phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
She answered.
No one spoke.
Then a woman whispered softly.
"If you want to know whose baby Chloe is carrying..."
The line went silent.
"...don't ask Adrian."
Click.
The call disconnected.
Stella immediately checked the number.
Private.
Untraceable.
She looked down at the medical invoice again.
Pregnant.
Room 603.
Her mother's necklace.
The lies.
The rushed wedding.
None of it fit together.
Unless...
The pregnancy wasn't meant to create a family.
It was meant to destroy one.
As she pulled into her driveway, another notification appeared.
Chloe had just uploaded a new photo.
She wasn't showing her face.
Only a familiar gold pendant resting against her chest.
Stella's mother's necklace.
The caption contained just six words.
"Some promises change everything forever."
Most people would think it was another meaningless post.
But Stella noticed something no one else would.
Reflected in the pendant's polished surface...
Was the edge of an ultrasound photo.
And for the first time...
Stella realized Chloe wasn't simply stealing her fiancé.
May you like
She was preparing the entire world to believe she was carrying Adrian Blackwood's child.
