CHAPTER 5 — “She’s Dead.” Three Words That Changed Marcus’s Life Forever

The knock came just before dawn.
Not on Marcus's apartment.
On the office door of Detective Sarah Collins.
She looked up from the mountain of paperwork covering her desk as a young officer entered carrying a sealed evidence bag.
"We found a body."
Sarah sighed.
"Identification?"
The officer swallowed.
"Preliminary ID says it's Sophia Westbrook."
Silence filled the room.
Sarah slowly stood.
"The missing billionaire?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"Where?"
"An abandoned industrial dock on the east river."
Sarah grabbed her coat.
"Take me there."
Thirty minutes later...
Red and blue police lights reflected across the black water.
News helicopters already circled overhead.
Reporters crowded behind yellow tape.
Camera flashes lit the freezing morning.
The body lay beneath a white sheet.
Sarah knelt beside the medical examiner.
"What do we know?"
"Female."
"Approximately forty-two."
"No identification on the body."
"But..."
He hesitated.
"The face matches Sophia Westbrook."
Sarah slowly lifted the edge of the sheet.
Even after years as a homicide detective...
The sight made her stomach tighten.
Sophia looked strangely peaceful.
Too peaceful.
Almost...
Prepared.
Sarah immediately noticed something odd.
"There are no defensive wounds."
The examiner nodded.
"And almost no signs of struggle."
Sarah looked toward the river.
"Then someone wanted us to believe she died here."
Less than an hour later...
Every television station interrupted regular programming.
BREAKING NEWS
MISSING BILLIONAIRE SOPHIA WESTBROOK FOUND DEAD
The story spread across America within minutes.
Outside Westbrook Industries headquarters, employees cried openly.
Flowers began appearing outside the building.
Social media exploded.
Millions mourned the woman they believed had dedicated her life to helping others.
Inside the executive boardroom...
Victor Westbrook quietly turned off the television.
No tears.
No grief.
Only relief.
He poured himself a glass of expensive whiskey.
Victoria Kane looked uneasy.
"Is it over?"
Victor smiled for the first time in weeks.
"Almost."
Damien Cross stood silently beside the window.
"I don't like this."
Victor raised an eyebrow.
"You don't like what?"
"The body."
Victor laughed.
"A dead body is a dead body."
Damien shook his head.
"No."
He placed several crime-scene photographs on the table.
"The hands."
Victor looked.
"What about them?"
"No calluses."
Victoria frowned.
"So?"
Damien looked directly at them.
"Sophia had climbed mountains."
"She volunteered on construction projects."
"She rode horses."
"She had scars."
"The woman they found doesn't."
The room became silent.
Victor slowly set down his whiskey.
"You think it's not her?"
Damien answered quietly.
"I think someone wanted us to stop looking."
Victor stared at him.
Then slowly smiled again.
"Good."
Damien looked confused.
Victor leaned back.
"If she's alive..."
"...she'll eventually contact Marcus Richardson."
The room fell silent.
Victoria whispered,
"So we don't need to find Sophia."
Victor nodded.
"We follow Marcus."
Across town...
Marcus knew none of this.
He was unloading pallets at the warehouse when his supervisor yelled across the loading dock.
"Richardson!"
Marcus climbed down from the forklift.
"What?"
The supervisor held out his phone.
"Weren't you talking to this woman?"
Marcus looked at the screen.
Sophia's smiling face filled every news app.
Below it, the headline read:
BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS FOUND DEAD
Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.
"No..."
His supervisor frowned.
"You know her?"
Marcus couldn't answer.
Only three weeks earlier...
She had been sitting across from Lily.
Smiling.
Thanking them for a bowl of soup.
Now...
She was dead?
He immediately clocked out.
"I have to go."
When Marcus reached home, Lily ran into his arms.
"Daddy!"
He hugged her tightly.
Almost too tightly.
"Easy," she giggled.
"You'll squish me."
Marcus forced a smile.
Mrs. Bell stood quietly in the hallway.
"You heard?"
Marcus nodded.
"Lily doesn't know."
Mrs. Bell looked toward the child playing on the living room floor.
"Maybe that's for the best."
Marcus walked to the television.
Every channel showed the same smiling photograph of Sophia.
Lily looked up.
"Daddy..."
"That's our friend."
Marcus knelt beside her.
"Yes."
"Why is everyone saying she died?"
He couldn't answer.
Instead...
Lily quietly disappeared into her bedroom.
A minute later she returned carrying a small cardboard box.
"I made this."
Inside lay a child's drawing.
Three stick figures holding hands beneath a purple sun.
Marcus.
Lily.
Sophia.
At the top, written in crooked letters:
Friends Eat Together.
Marcus's eyes filled with tears.
"We were going to give it to her."
Lily whispered,
"Now she can't have it."
Marcus hugged his daughter again.
"We'll keep it safe."
Neither of them noticed someone photographing the apartment from across the street.
Click.
Click.
Click.
That same evening...
An elderly homeless veteran walked into a small pawn shop carrying a wet purple scarf.
The owner barely looked up.
"What do you want?"
"I found this."
The owner shrugged.
"It's just a scarf."
The veteran shook his head.
"No."
He carefully cut open one corner.
A tiny gold key dropped onto the counter.
Both men stared.
The key shimmered beneath the shop lights.
Engraved across its surface were two words:
Vault 27
The pawn shop owner frowned.
"That's no house key."
The veteran smiled.
"I figured."
"What are you going to do?"
The old man looked toward the television showing Sophia's funeral coverage.
"I think..."
"...I'm going to find the little girl who knitted this."
Meanwhile...
Detective Sarah Collins sat alone in the medical examiner's office.
Something bothered her.
She picked up the autopsy report again.
Then suddenly stopped.
One sentence had been overlooked.
Estimated time of death: Between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
Sarah frowned.
She opened another file.
Security footage from Miller's Diner.
Timestamp:
9:17 p.m.
There was Sophia.
Walking out of the diner wearing Lily's purple scarf.
Alive.
More than an hour after the official estimated time of death.
Sarah's heartbeat quickened.
She replayed the footage.
Again.
And again.
There was no mistake.
The woman on the dock...
Could not have been Sophia.
Someone had staged the murder.
Someone wanted the world to stop searching.
Sarah immediately reached for her phone.
"Get me everything you have on Marcus Richardson."
The dispatcher hesitated.
"The warehouse worker?"
"Yes."
"Why him?"
Sarah stared at the frozen image of Marcus opening the diner door for Sophia.
"Because..."
"...I think he's the next target."
Far across the city...
A black SUV sat outside Marcus's apartment with its lights off.
Inside, Victor Westbrook watched the building through binoculars.
He smiled coldly.
"Keep watching."
"Sooner or later..."
"...Sophia will come back to the only man she ever trusted."
But Victor had no idea...
Sophia had already left Marcus something far more valuable than money.
A truth powerful enough to destroy an empire.
And hidden inside a forgotten church...
May you like
Father Michael still guarded the sealed envelope that could bring the mighty Westbrook family to its knees.
