CHAPTER 5 — "The Man Who Broke In Wasn't After The Ledger... He Was After Theo."

The flash grenade exploded.
A blinding white light swallowed the apartment.
Marcus couldn't hear.
Couldn't see.
Only one instinct remained.
Protect Theo.
He threw his body over his son just as shattered glass rained across the living room.
Theo screamed.
"Dad!"
"I'm here!"
Marcus wrapped both arms around the little boy, shielding his head while the room echoed with heavy boots.
One...
Two...
Three...
Someone had entered.
Eleanor shouted from somewhere across the apartment.
"Bedroom! Move!"
Another crash.
A bookshelf toppled.
Emily coughed violently through the smoke.
Then—
A deep voice cut through the chaos.
"Nobody has to die."
Marcus recognized it immediately.
The man from Miller's Diner.
The one in the black raincoat.
His voice remained unnervingly calm.
"Give us the child."
Marcus's entire body froze.
Not the envelope.
Not the key.
Not the files.
The child.
Marcus tightened his grip on Theo.
"You'll have to kill me first."
The stranger almost sounded disappointed.
"I was hoping you wouldn't say that."
A laser sight suddenly appeared on the opposite wall.
Then another.
Three red dots slowly swept across the smoke-filled apartment.
Marcus counted them.
Three shooters.
Professionals.
Eleanor crawled beside him.
Her face was bleeding from a cut above her eyebrow.
"They're ex-military."
"How do you know?"
"Because I hired two of them twelve years ago."
Marcus stared.
"What?"
"No time."
She shoved a small handgun into his hands.
Marcus immediately pushed it back.
"I've never fired a gun."
"Then pray you don't have to."
The stranger spoke again.
"Marcus."
Hearing his own name chilled him.
"You've made a mistake."
Marcus shouted back,
"My mistake was opening the door to strangers?"
"No."
The man's voice remained strangely patient.
"Your mistake was believing Diane told you the whole truth."
Marcus felt anger replacing fear.
"You keep saying that."
"Then explain it!"
Silence.
Finally the stranger answered.
"Diane didn't hide the ledger..."
"...because of what was inside it."
Marcus frowned.
"What?"
"She hid it because of whose name appeared on the final page."
Marcus looked toward Emily.
She seemed just as confused.
Eleanor wasn't.
Her expression changed completely.
"No..."
she whispered.
"It can't be."
The stranger continued.
"Ask Eleanor."
Marcus turned.
"Eleanor?"
She closed her eyes.
"I hoped she was wrong."
"What are you talking about?"
Eleanor slowly answered.
"The ledger contains hundreds of names."
Marcus nodded impatiently.
"So?"
"But one name..."
"...was never supposed to exist."
Marcus's heartbeat accelerated.
"Whose?"
Before Eleanor could answer—
The apartment suddenly went dark.
Every light went out.
The entire building lost power.
Someone had cut the electricity.
Only lightning flashing outside illuminated the room.
For a split second Marcus saw a shadow moving toward Theo.
He reacted without thinking.
He lunged.
The shadow crashed into him.
Both men slammed into the dining table.
Wood splintered.
The stranger was far stronger than Marcus expected.
He twisted Marcus's wrist effortlessly.
The handgun skidded across the floor.
Marcus threw a desperate punch.
The man blocked it.
Then...
Instead of hitting Marcus...
He whispered into his ear.
"I'm trying to keep your son alive."
Marcus froze.
The stranger shoved him backward instead of finishing the fight.
Why?
He had every opportunity.
Instead he stepped away.
Almost...
As if hurting Marcus had never been his objective.
Theo cried from behind the couch.
"Dad!"
Marcus crawled back to him.
The stranger looked directly at the frightened little boy.
For the first time...
His expression softened.
Almost like pity.
Then another voice echoed from the hallway.
"Liam!"
The stranger immediately turned.
A second group had arrived.
But these men wore black tactical gear with no insignia.
Unlike the first stranger...
These men carried assault rifles openly.
One of them shouted,
"Kill everyone!"
Liam's face changed instantly.
"No!"
The gunfire started anyway.
Bullets tore through the apartment walls.
Furniture exploded into splinters.
Windows shattered.
Marcus dragged Theo toward the hallway while Eleanor fired twice, forcing the attackers to duck.
Emily screamed.
"They're not with him!"
Liam shouted back,
"I know!"
To Marcus's complete disbelief...
The man from the diner turned his own weapon toward the newly arrived gunmen.
He fired three controlled shots.
One attacker fell instantly.
Another retreated behind the doorway.
Marcus stared in disbelief.
"He's fighting them?"
Eleanor grabbed Marcus's shoulder.
"I don't understand..."
Neither did Liam.
He looked genuinely furious.
"I told them no civilians!"
One masked gunman yelled back,
"Orders changed!"
"What orders?"
"Take the boy."
"Dead or alive."
The apartment became silent for one terrifying heartbeat.
Dead...
or alive?
Liam slowly lowered his weapon.
He looked directly at Marcus.
"They've gone rogue."
Marcus shouted back,
"Who are you?"
For several seconds...
Liam simply stared at Theo.
Then he answered.
"I worked with your wife."
Marcus felt the world tilt.
"No."
Liam nodded.
"Twelve years."
"You expect me to believe that after breaking into my apartment?"
"I broke in..."
"...because I got here before they did."
Marcus couldn't process what he was hearing.
Everything he believed shifted again.
Diane.
Emily.
Eleanor.
Now this stranger.
How many lives had his wife lived?
A deafening explosion suddenly rocked the building.
The entire floor shook violently.
Concrete dust poured from the ceiling.
Someone had detonated explosives downstairs.
Eleanor looked horrified.
"They're collapsing the building."
Marcus grabbed Theo.
"We have to leave!"
Liam pointed toward a steel emergency exit hidden behind the kitchen pantry.
"That way!"
Marcus hesitated.
"Why should I trust you?"
Liam met his eyes.
"Because before Diane died..."
"...she made me promise that if anything ever happened to her..."
"...I'd protect her son."
Marcus's breath caught.
Only one person knew the sentence Diane always repeated before leaving for work.
Liam finished it.
Exactly as she used to say it.
"If anything happens to me... promise me Theo gets to grow up believing the world still has good people in it."
Marcus had never told anyone those words.
Not even the police.
Not even his parents.
Only Diane...
...and whoever had been standing beside her that night.
Before Marcus could answer—
Theo tugged gently on Liam's sleeve.
The frightened little boy looked up with tear-filled eyes and asked the question that froze everyone in the room.
"Did you love my mommy too?"
Liam couldn't answer.
He simply looked away.
And for the first time since Marcus had met him...
The man who feared nothing...
May you like
Began to cry.
