Chapter 9 - THE RETIREMENT CEREMONYMonday morning arrived under a clear blue sky.

Naval Station Norfolk was packed.

Thousands of sailors.

Officers.

Veterans.

Families.

The ceremony was supposed to celebrate my retirement after thirty-six years.

Instead, it became a trap.

My mother was hidden in a secure location.

My father sat in the front row.

Melanie and Ethan sat beside him.

Admiral Whitaker stood near the stage.

Commander Alvarez was everywhere.

And Rear Admiral Victor Hale walked toward the podium.

He smiled.

“Admiral Bennett.”

I returned the smile.

“Admiral Hale.”

He leaned close.

“Beautiful day to end a career.”

“Or begin something.”

His smile disappeared for half a second.

Then returned.

“Indeed.”

The ceremony began.

The band played.

The colors were presented.

I stood beneath the American flag wearing my dress whites.

My medals reflected the sunlight.

Hale gave his speech.

He praised my service.

My leadership.

My courage.

Every word sounded perfect.

Then he reached the final paragraph.

“And now, Admiral Bennett will receive the ceremonial sword representing thirty-six years of honorable service.”

A sailor approached.

He carried the sword.

I recognized it.

Something was wrong.

The handle was different.

I looked at Commander Alvarez.

He nodded almost imperceptibly.

I took the sword.

Hale smiled.

Then I said:

“Admiral Hale.”

“Yes?”

“I know.”

His face went still.

“I know about Nightfall.”

Silence.

Then every screen behind us changed.

Documents appeared.

Bank transfers.

Photographs.

Secret meetings.

Hale's name.

Carter's name.

Black Harbor.

The crowd gasped.

Hale stepped backward.

“What is this?”

I smiled.

“Your retirement gift.”

Security officers surrounded him.

He tried to reach inside his jacket.

Six weapons were immediately aimed at him.

“Don't.”

He froze.

I stepped toward him.

“You spent thirty-six years believing I was your pawn.”

Hale stared at me.

“You were.”

“No.”

I removed my ceremonial cover.

“I was the person you should have feared.”

He laughed.

“You think this ends here?”

“No.”

My mother walked onto the stage.

The crowd erupted.

Hale's face went white.

“Eleanor…”

She smiled.

“Hello, Victor.”

He stumbled backward.

“You're dead.”

“Apparently not.”

My father stood.

Then Admiral Whitaker.

Then Melanie.

Then Ethan.

Then Commander Alvarez.

The entire truth was exposed.

Hale had ordered the assassination attempt against my mother.

He had manipulated Carter.

He had attempted to infiltrate my career.

And he had planned my death.

But there was one final piece.

My mother stepped toward the microphone.

“Victor Hale was not the highest-ranking person involved.”

The crowd fell silent.

I looked at her.

“What?”

She nodded.

“There's someone above him.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who?”

She looked toward the VIP section.

A former Secretary of Defense stood.

He slowly stood.

People around him backed away.

My mother said his name.

“William Rourke.”

The man smiled.

Then applauded.

Once.

Twice.

Slowly.

“You always were difficult, Eleanor.”

Security officers moved toward him.

He raised both hands.

“I surrender.”

I stared.

“Why?”

He smiled.

“Because Claire has already won.”

My mother looked confused.

Rourke turned toward me.

“Your father thinks this was about revenge.”

He shook his head.

“It wasn't.”

“Then what was it about?”

He smiled.

“Succession.”

I frowned.

“Succession?”

“You spent thirty-six years becoming exactly what we feared.”

He looked at my stars.

“An admiral nobody could control.”

May you like

Then he said something I would never forget.

“That's why we needed you alive.”
