Chapter 10 - Home at LastTwo months later.

The Oakhaven Bakery had expanded, adding a bright sunny porch with flower boxes and a fresh coat of white paint.

Inside, business was booming. But today, the bakery was closed to the public.

A small, intimate gathering filled the cozy shop. In the center of the room stood a seven-year-old girl wearing a flower crown in her messy brown hair, holding a plate of double-chocolate cupcakes.

Nina skipped over to the corner where Darren and Mara stood, both of them wearing matching smiles.

“Mom, Dad,” Nina announced proudly, using the word Dad as naturally as if he had been there every single day of her life. “Can I eat the frosting off the top now?”

Mara laughed, kissing the top of her daughter’s head. “Only if you save the cake for the wedding ceremony, sweetheart.”

Darren pulled Mara close against his side, wrapping his arms around her waist as they watched Nina run back toward the kitchen.

He looked down at the gold heart necklace that now rested safely against Mara’s chest, catching the morning sunlight pouring through the bakery window. The engraving on the back—D + M forever—was no longer a ghost of the past. It was their future.

Darren had spent twelve years building an empire of glass and steel, running from the only thing that truly mattered. But it took a dusty country road, a flat tire, and a little girl with dirt on her knees to teach him a simple truth:
