Chapter 7 - THE CRUMBLING TOWERThe descent of Harrison Sterling was not a slow slide; it was a catastrophic avalanche.

Within two hours of our phone call, federal agents swarmed the ground floor of the Sterling Tower, executing search warrants and freezing corporate assets across three states. Stock prices for Sterling Enterprises plummeted by forty percent in minutes as emergency trading halts were triggered by the New York Stock Exchange.

From our living room in Charleston, Emily and I watched the financial news broadcast live on our television screen. Reporters in sharp suits stood outside the gleaming glass doors of the Sterling Tower as federal agents in blue windbreakers carted out dozens of heavy cardboard boxes filled with incriminating documents and hard drives.

Emily clutched a mug of tea, her eyes wide as she watched the empire that had tormented us unravel in real-time.

“Jake… how did you move so fast?” she whispered, looking at me with a mixture of awe and disbelief. “Even with military intelligence, dismantling a multi-million-dollar real estate conglomerate in a single afternoon seems impossible.”

I walked over, resting my hand on the back of her chair, and smiled softly. “It’s not about speed, Em. It’s about preparation. While Tyler and Sterling were busy celebrating their victory, they left their digital front door wide open. Greed makes people sloppy. They thought they were untouchable because they had money and local influence. They forgot that federal oversight doesn't care about local country club memberships.”

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and glanced at the screen. It was a secure message from Victor Vance: Sterling just attempted to charter a private jet to the Caymans. Local federal marshals intercepted him on the tarmac at Charleston International. He’s currently in custody.

“It’s over,” I said quietly, locking the screen. “Sterling is done. My mother’s assets are frozen under federal investigation. Tyler is facing twenty years in maximum security. The war is won.”

Emily set her mug down, stood up, and wrapped her arms tightly around my waist, burying her face against my chest. For the first time since I walked through the front door, the tension that had gripped her shoulders vanished entirely. She wasn't shaking anymore.

“Welcome home, Jake,” she whispered softly against my shirt.

This time, the words carried no coldness. No hesitation. Just pure, unconditional relief.
