Chapter 5 - THE SAFE HOUSE IN THE FOGThe speedboat cut through the violent midnight waves for over an hour before the jagged outline of an abandoned lighthouse emerged from the thick sea fog.

My arms ached from holding Emma tight against the violent pitching of the hull, and my maid’s uniform was soaked through with saltwater and spray.

Lorenzo steered the boat expertly into a hidden concrete slipway beneath the crumbling stone structure. The engine died with a low shudder, leaving us surrounded by the haunting, rhythmic crash of waves against the rocks.

“Where are we?” I asked, helping Emma out of the wet cockpit.

“An old naval outpost I bought a decade ago,” Lorenzo panted, clutching his side. Fresh blood was slowly seeping through the improvised bandage on his shirt. “No one knows about this place except me. Not even Marco. Not even Elena.”

We scrambled up the slippery stone steps into the dark, echoing interior of the lighthouse base. Lorenzo punched a code into a rusted keypad on the wall, and heavy steel doors hissed open, revealing a surprisingly high-tech safe house equipped with backup generators, medical supplies, and a bank of computer monitors.

As soon as we stepped inside, Lorenzo collapsed against the edge of a steel desk, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

“Mr. Duca!” I dropped Emma to the floor safely and rushed to his side. I ripped open his blood-soaked shirt. The bullet had passed clean through his lower abdomen, but the physical exertion had torn the stitches he had somehow managed to apply before our encounter, causing severe internal bleeding.

“I’m… fine,” he choked out, his vision blurring.

“You’re bleeding to death, you idiot!” I snapped, tearing open a sterile medical kit from the wall mount. “Hold this pressure pad down while I prep the surgical stapler. If you die on me, my daughter and I are stranded in the middle of a mafia war with zero protection!”

Emma walked over, holding her stuffed rabbit out toward Lorenzo. “Mr. Bear says you have to stay awake.”

A weak, humorless chuckle escaped Lorenzo’s lips. He reached out with a trembling hand and lightly touched the stuffed rabbit’s ear. “Tell Mr. Bear… I’m trying.”

For the next hour, the safe house became a makeshift battlefield of medical triage. With shaking hands and a fierce, clinical focus born from my nearly completed nursing school days, I cleaned the wound, cauterized the torn vessel, and stapled the tissue shut. Lorenzo didn't make a single sound, though his knuckles turned white as he gripped the steel table until his skin broke.

By the time I finished bandaging his chest properly, he was shivering violently from shock and blood loss, slumped unconscious in a swivel chair.

I slumped back against the counter, utterly exhausted, my hands covered in blood.

Emma had curled up on a leather couch in the corner, clutching her rabbit, fast asleep despite the chaos.

I walked over to the computer terminal, wiping my hands on a clean towel, and booted up the secure satellite feed linked to the Duca estate.

The monitors flickered to life.

On screen one, the main dining room of the mansion appeared in crystal-clear high definition.

Elena Duca sat at the head of the long mahogany table, surrounded by the three remaining capos of the syndicate. A crystal flute of champagne sat untouched in front of her.

Her voice echoed through the safe house speakers, calm, elegant, and dripping with venom.

“Gentlemen, my brother is dead. The leadership of the Duca family now falls to us. And our first order of business is hunting down the traitor who let him escape…”

I stared at the screen, a cold fury rising in my chest.
