Chapter 6 - REBUILDING THE FOUNDATIONThe first week of the new year passed in a blur of fluorescent lights, pediatric check-ups, social worker interviews, and legal filings.

Noah’s hypothermia was caught just in time. Thanks to the rapid response of the emergency medical staff and a forty-eight-hour stay in the neonatal intensive care unit under strict warming protocols, his core temperature stabilized, and his lungs cleared without lasting damage.

Ethan spent those two days sleeping in a comfortable recliner chair placed right beside his baby brother’s hospital crib. For the first thirty-six hours, every time the door clicked open, he would flinch, his eyes darting toward the threshold with a hunted, hyper-vigilant expression.

I sat beside him, holding his small, calloused hand between mine.

“You’re safe now, buddy,” I whispered for the hundredth time, kissing the top of his messy hair. “Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. I’m not going back to Germany. I resigned from the overseas division this morning. My new office is ten minutes away from your school, and I’m not leaving your side.”

Ethan looked up at me, a tiny, tentative tear slipping down his cheek. “You’re not going away anymore, Dad?”

“Never again,” I promised fiercely. “We’re a team. Just the three of us.”

The legal fallout was swift and absolute. Armed with the cloud security footage, the bank logs showing fraudulent transfers, the forged guardianship papers, and the medical reports detailing Noah’s hypothermia, the District Attorney's office refused bail entirely. Both Eleanor and Rachel were charged with multiple counts of felony child endangerment, grand larceny, elder exploitation, and conspiracy to commit fraud.

My mother’s defense attorney tried to argue family dynamics and "misguided maternal overextension," but the judge took less than ten minutes to reject the motion, citing the absolute depravity of abandoning a fourteen-year-old child and a newborn infant in a freezing apartment while partying in luxury.
