Chapter 10 - The Unbroken CircleSix months later, the bitter Chicago winter had completely dissolved into the warm, golden light of a June afternoon.

The Mercer Foundation's Northside headquarters was thriving. What had once been a decaying, forgotten slum block was now a vibrant community hub filled with green trees, freshly painted brick facades, and the sound of children laughing in a newly built playground across the street.
Inside the penthouse suite high above the city, the double doors leading to the private terrace were thrown wide open, letting a gentle summer breeze sweep through the luxurious rooms.
Ruth Mercer sat in her favorite armchair by the open terrace, basking in the warm sunlight. She looked healthier, years younger, the lines of exhaustion and starvation completely erased from her face.
Beside her, stretched out lazily across the white marble floor, was Otis the mastiff, fast asleep with his heavy paws twitching in a dream.
Dante stepped out onto the terrace, holding a tray with a glass of fresh lemonade and a small plate of shortbread cookies. He set them down on the small table beside her chair, pulling up a wooden seat to sit right beside her.
"Lemonade, Ma," Dante said softly, smiling as he handed her the glass.
Ruth took it with a steady hand, taking a small sip before looking at him with clear, loving eyes. "You spoil me too much, Leo."
"Never enough," Dante replied, sitting back and looking out over the skyline.
The city stretched out before them—vast, glittering, and complex. It was a city ruled by power, shadows, and unwritten laws, a city that feared the very mention of Dante Mercer's name. But sitting here, in the quiet warmth of the afternoon sun with his mother alive and safe beside him, Dante knew that the true strength of an empire wasn't measured in territory or wealth.
It was measured in the bonds that survived the coldest nights.
From inside the apartment, the soft chime of the elevator echoed through the hallways, followed by the sound of Clara laughing as she arrived with the weekly foundation audit reports. Otis lifted his massive head, gave a single happy thump of his tail against the floor, and settled back down.

Ruth reached out, her warm, steady fingers resting gently over Dante’s scarred hand.
Dante turned his palm upward, interlocking his fingers securely with hers, and for the first time in his life, the boss of Chicago felt completely at home.
