Chapter 7 - The Empire RestsHigh above the city, on the forty-fifth floor of the Escalante Global Tower, the panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking view of the entire metropolis glittering beneath the evening sky.

I stood by the glass, holding a crystal flute of vintage champagne, watching the tiny ant-like movement of traffic far below.
The boardroom behind me was quiet, save for the low murmur of executives reviewing the final integration reports of Sterling Enterprises into our primary portfolio. The hostile takeover was complete. The brand had been rebranded, the toxic debt restructured, and the name Sterling was officially being phased out of commercial real estate entirely.
Julian Vance stepped up beside me, handing over a sleek black leather folder.
"The final audit report for the Sterling accounts is complete, Madam," Julian said respectfully. "All remaining commercial properties have been absorbed. As requested, we have left Margaret Sterling's basic pension fund untouched, so she won't become an absolute ward of the state—though she has been forced to downsize significantly."
I took the folder, flipping it open just enough to see the final balance sheet.
"And Andrew?" I asked softly, my eyes reflecting the twinkling lights of the city.
"He’s currently working night shifts at a logistics warehouse on the docks," Julian replied, his voice neutral. "His professional license has been suspended pending federal investigations into corporate mismanagement during his tenure. No major firm will touch him."
I closed the folder, a quiet sense of closure settling over my chest like a deep, satisfying breath.
I hadn't set out to destroy him. Four years ago, I had simply wanted to build a life, to share my world with a man I thought was worthy of standing beside me. But power and pride are a dangerous intoxicant. They make men forget who holds the cup.
"Let him stay there," I murmured, turning away from the window. "A man cannot learn the value of an empire until he has walked through the dirt."
Julian bowed slightly. "The board is ready for your keynote address downstairs, Madam. The global partners are eager to hear the new strategic vision for Escalante Holdings."
I straightened the lapels of my tailored white blazer, stepping away from the glass toward the heavy oak doors that led to the grand auditorium.

The scar on my palm had healed into a thin, pale line—a permanent reminder of the night I shattered the illusion. But as I opened the doors and stepped out into the brilliant, blinding light of the stage, I wasn't looking back at the past anymore.
The kingdom was rebuilt. And this time, I sat upon the throne alone.
