Chapter 2 - THE PAPER TRAIL OF A MONSTER"Order in the court!" Judge Vance slammed her gavel down three times, the heavy wooden cracks echoing like gunshots across the room. "Silence! I will clear this gallery instantly if there is another outburst!"

The murmuring subsided, but the tension in the room remained suffocating.

My mother was standing up now, her hands trembling as she grabbed Brandon’s sleeve. "Brandon, answer me! What is she showing the judge?"

"Shut up, Mom," Brandon hissed through teeth so clenched his jaw turned white. "Just shut up and let Henderson talk!"

"I suggest you sit down, Mrs. Carter," Judge Vance commanded sharply. She put on her reading glasses and began flipping through the bank statements and certified Department of Defense audit logs I had submitted.

Every second of silence felt like a minute. The only sound in the room was the rustle of paper and the heavy, ragged breathing coming from my brother.

"Ms. Carter," Judge Vance said without looking up from the documents. "These records indicate a Veterans Affairs benefit account under your name, receiving monthly disability disbursements totaling $3,400 per month."

"Yes, Your Honor," I answered.

"And according to these banking records from First Iowa Commerce, those funds were being automatically transferred into an account named 'Carter Development LLC' starting in March of 2019."

"That is correct."

"And who is listed as the sole proprietor and signatory for Carter Development LLC?"

I didn't answer. I just pointed my finger straight at Brandon.

"My brother," I said softly. "While I was lying in a hospital bed in Germany after my convoy took a hit, Brandon forged my power of attorney. He convinced our grandfather that I was financially reckless and needed him to manage my affairs. For six years, Brandon didn't just steal my money—he stole my grandfather's life savings under the guise of 'managing the farm investment account.'"

My mother gasped, dropping back down into her leather chair as if her legs had given out. "No... no, that’s impossible. Brandon took care of your grandfather! He stayed here while you were gone! He ran the farm!"

"He didn't run the farm, Mom," I said, turning to look her dead in the eye for the first time in two years. "He mortgaged the farm. He took out three separate equity loans in Grandfather’s name while Grandfather was suffering from vascular dementia. And do you know where that money went?"

I looked at Mr. Henderson, whose face was now as pale as his client's.

"It went to offshore gambling accounts and failed real estate spec properties in Florida," I revealed. "Grandfather didn't leave me the farm and the investment account out of favoritism, Mom. He left them to me because six months before he died, during a brief moment of clarity, he realized what Brandon had done to him. He called a military legal assistance officer. He changed his will in secret, and he handed me the evidence to put his own grandson in prison."

Brandon suddenly slammed both palms down on the table, standing up so violently his chair flipped backward and crashed against the rail.

"She’s lying!" Brandon screamed, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "She faked those bank records! She’s trying to frame me because Grandfather loved me more! You bitch! You think you can come back here after eight years and take everything I built?!"

"Mr. Carter! Sit down immediately or I will have the bailiffs place you in custody!" Judge Vance shouted, her gavel smashing against the bench.

Two armed bailiffs immediately moved toward Brandon, their hands resting on their holsters.

"You think you won, Natalie?!" Brandon yelled, his voice cracking with unhinged rage as the officers grabbed his arms and forced him down. "You don't know anything! You don't know what Grandfather put in that barn! You don't know what’s coming for you!"

The entire courtroom went dead silent at his words.

I didn't flinch. "I know exactly what's in the barn, Brandon," I whispered. "And so will the FBI by five o'clock today."
