Chapter 3 - THE RETURN OF THE KINGAt 3:30 PM, Patterson Market was experiencing its usual mid-afternoon lull. Brent Lawson was leaning against the customer service counter, picking his teeth with a toothpick and feeling victorious. He had already reassigned Hannah’s cleaning shift to a younger kid for lower pay, proving to the regional board that he was cutting operational costs.

Suddenly, the automatic doors slid open with a violent metallic hiss.

A battalion of six men in black tactical suits marched into the store, instantly forming two parallel lines leading from the entrance straight to the manager's counter. Customers gasped, backing away with their shopping carts. Cashiers froze.

"What the hell is this?" Brent yelled, stomping over angrily. "You can't bring private security in here! This is private property!"

The lead guard ignored him, clicking his earpiece. "Perimeter secure. Clear for the Chairman."

From the backseat of a black Maybach outside, two doors opened.

First came Hannah Reed, now wearing a sharp, dark blue designer coat that Julian Vance had handed her in the car. Her hair was pulled back elegantly, and her eyes, though still wide with disbelief, held a new sense of quiet authority.

Behind her stepped Arthur Vance.

He was no longer wearing the scuffed jacket. He wore a bespoke Savile Row suit made of navy cashmere, a silk tie, and an antique gold watch that sparkled under the harsh fluorescent lights of the supermarket. In his hand, however, he still carried the simple brown paper bag containing the turkey sandwich and soup.

Brent’s mouth dropped open. He recognized the face immediately from corporate newsletters and financial magazines, though he had never imagined seeing the billionaire titan in person.

"Mr... Mr. Vance?" Brent stuttered, his face draining of all color. "Sir! What a profound honor! If... if we had known you were conducting an inspection today, we would have prepared a red carpet—"

Arthur Vance raised a single hand. The absolute silence that fell over the store was suffocating.

"I was here three hours ago, Mr. Lawson," Arthur said, his voice echoing across the wide aisles like thunder. "I didn't receive a red carpet then. I received an insult. I was called a bum. And I was threatened with forcible removal by your security."

Brent felt his knees go weak. A cold sweat broke out across his forehead. "Sir... I... there was an old man... he had no money... he was blocking the line..."

"The old man was me," Arthur said coldly. "I conduct annual, unannounced undercover audits of my retail properties to see how our staff treats the most vulnerable members of society. And today, Mr. Lawson, you failed spectacularly."

Brent’s eyes darted frantically around the room until they landed on Hannah. His expression shifted from terror to malice. "Wait... Hannah! She tricked you, sir! She breached protocol! She was late this morning, and then she used company time to cause a scene—"

"She used her own money to feed a stranger," Arthur interrupted, stepping forward until he was inches from Brent’s face. "While you used your pathetic sliver of authority to humiliate an elder and ruin a hard-working girl's livelihood."

Arthur turned to Julian Vance, who was standing behind him with an iPad. "Julian. Read the execution order."

Julian stepped forward, clicking his pen. "Effective immediately, by order of the Board of Directors of Vance Global: Patterson Market Store #402 is undergoing an immediate executive restructuring. Brent Lawson is terminated for gross ethical misconduct, verbal harassment, and endangerment of corporate reputation. You have five minutes to clear your desk."

"You can't fire me!" Brent screamed, his face turning purple. "I've been manager here for six years! My brother-in-law is the Vice President of Operations!"

"Correction," Julian said smoothly. "Your brother-in-law was the Vice President. He was relieved of his duties twenty minutes ago for covering up your prior employee abuse complaints."

A chorus of gasps erupted from the cashiers and shoppers who had gathered around. Brent looked like he was about to vomit.

Arthur Vance then turned to Hannah. The stern look on his face vanished, replaced by immense warmth.

"Hannah Reed," Arthur said loudly, so everyone in the store could hear. "You have a business administration degree, correct?"

"Yes, sir," Hannah replied, her voice trembling slightly.

"You spent three years cleaning floors because this system refused to see your potential," Arthur said. "Today, you showed more leadership, empathy, and crisis management than anyone in this entire corporate structure. As of this moment, I am offering you the position of Regional Operations Director for Vance Retail, overseeing forty-two stores in this district."

Hannah gasped, covering her mouth. "Sir... I... I don't know what to say..."

"Say yes, Miss Reed," Arthur smiled softly. "Because your first official duty starts right now."

He pointed a finger at the trembling, pale Brent Lawson.

"Director Reed... please instruct security on what to do with the former manager."
