Chapter 2 - THE SPIDER’S WEB UNRAVELS

The next four hours inside the monitoring bunker felt like walking through an eternity of glass. I watched my home transform into a psychological battleground.

With Rosa banished to her basement quarters under the threat of police intervention for trespassing, Patricia took full control of the mansion. She stalked through the hallways like an occupying general. She inspected the kitchen, throwing away the healthy, balanced meals Rosa had meticulously prepped for the girls, replacing them with cold, boxed leftovers.

On camera four, I watched Daniela try to sneak a glass of water from the kitchen counter. Patricia materialized behind her like a ghost, snatching the glass away so fast it sloshed over the child's pajamas.

“We do not waste resources, Daniela,” Patricia scolded, her voice dripping with synthetic ice. “If you’re thirsty, you wait until mealtime. Discipline starts from within.”

My chest heaved. I wanted to smash the monitors. I wanted to kick down the reinforced steel door of the bunker, storm into the kitchen, and wrap my hands around Patricia’s throat. But a deeper, darker instinct kept me pinned to my chair.

Who is she really?

That question echoed through my mind with the force of a hammer striking an anvil.

When I met Patricia six months ago at an elite charity gala, she was the epitome of grace. Orphaned young, running a successful boutique art gallery, fiercely independent, and endlessly supportive of my grueling schedule as a tech CEO. She fit into my world with terrifying perfection. Too perfection.

I pulled out my encrypted smartphone and dialed a private investigator I had kept on retainer since my divorce three years ago.

“Vance,” I said the second the line connected.

“Mr. Sterling? I thought you were halfway to Zurich.”

“Cancel the Europe trip narrative. I’m sitting in my own security room watching my fiancée mentally torture my daughters. I need a deep background check on Patricia Vance. Everything. Financial records, past relationships, family history, previous employment, and any sealed court records. I want it on my desk by midnight.”

Vance’s tone instantly shifted from casual to razor-sharp professional. “Understood, sir. Give me six hours. I’ll dig up whatever skeletons she’s buried.”

As I hung up, Marcus spun around from his secondary workstation.

“Sir, you’re going to want to see this. We decrypted the audio on that smart-home hub in the master study. Patricia thought she was alone about twenty minutes ago. She made a phone call.”

My heart skipped a beat. “Play it.”

The audio feed crackled to life through the high-end speakers in the bunker. Patricia’s voice came through, but it wasn't the sweet, honeyed tone she used with me, nor the harsh, snapping hiss she used with the girls.

It was cold, calculated, and terrifyingly businesslike.

“Yes, the seed is planted,” Patricia said into the receiver. “Sterling swallowed the bait about the nanny hook, line, and sinker. He’s out of the country for three days. Once the prenuptial addendum is signed tomorrow morning—wait, no, he’s leaving tomorrow, I’m getting him to sign it tonight via electronic courier before he boards his private jet back from London—the asset transfer triggers automatically upon marriage.”

A pause. A cold, chilling laugh.

“No, the girls are non-factors. Once we’re married and he’s legally tied down, they’ll be shipped off to boarding school in Vermont before the ink is dry. He won't even have a say. He’ll be too busy dealing with the corporate restructuring I engineered.”

The line went dead.

Marcus stared at me, his eyes wide. “Sir... she’s not just terrorizing your kids. She’s engineering a hostile takeover of your entire life and estate.”

May you like

I didn’t answer. I just stared at the blank screen where Patricia’s face had been moments before. The puzzle pieces clicked into place with chilling finality. The missing money from the subsidiary accounts, the sudden push to merge our financial portfolios, the relentless whispering campaign against Rosa—it wasn’t paranoia.

It was a meticulously planned coup.
