Chapter 5 - THE SHOWDOWN AT THE GALA

The Grand Ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton in downtown Charlotte was a sea of tuxedos, floor-length gowns, and champagne flutes.

It was the annual Ferguson Charity Gala—the pinnacle of North Carolina’s high-society calendar.

Despite the arrest of Nicholas and the scandal brewing in the courts, Patricia Ferguson stood at the top of the grand staircase, wearing a emerald velvet gown and millions of dollars in diamonds. Beside her stood Gregory, looking smug as he shook hands with state senators and corporate titans.

Patricia believed she had stabilized the situation. Her lawyers had secured a temporary hold on Nicholas’s transfer to federal custody, and her public relations team was spinning the narrative flawlessly.

She tapped her microphone, her voice echoing through the crystal chandeliers.

“Welcome, esteemed guests, leaders, and friends,” Patricia announced, her voice oozing regal warmth. “Tonight, as we gather to support our children’s hospital, I am reminded that true strength lies in standing tall against false allegations and envious attacks...”

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open.

The loud CRACK reverberated like a gunshot.

The crowd gasped as a battalion of U.S. Military Police in full dress uniforms marched into the room in double file, taking positions along every exit. Behind them walked federal marshals and local police officers.

And at the head of the formation walked COLONEL RACHEL GARDNER, accompanied by Abigail, who walked with her head held high, wearing a dark navy suit that concealed her bandages but showed her unbreakable resolve.

Behind us walked Major Vance, pushing a wheelchair. In that wheelchair sat Clara Vance Ferguson.

The entire room went dead silent. Champagne glasses stopped mid-air.

Patricia’s face turned from glowing emerald to a ghastly, pale ash.

“What is the meaning of this outrage?!” Gregory screamed, stepping down the stairs. “Security! Escort these intruders out!”

None of the security guards moved. They were already surrounded by armed Military Police.

I stepped onto the central floor, my dress boots clicking against the marble.

“Patricia Ferguson!” I called out, my voice booming across the ballroom. “By order of the United States District Court and the State of North Carolina, you and your family are under arrest for federal racketeering, human trafficking, evidence tampering, and kidnapping!”

“You’re insane!” Patricia shrieked from the podium. “This is a public event! You have no proof!”

“Is that so?” I gestured to the technician booth at the back of the hall.

Sergeant Hayes flipped a master switch.

The massive thirty-foot projector screens meant to show Patricia’s charity tribute video suddenly flickered.

Instead of pictures of Patricia’s charity work, the screens filled with high-definition security footage recorded inside the Ferguson guest house three days ago.

The video showed Nicholas slapping Abigail across the face. It showed Gregory holding her arms behind her back. And it showed Patricia standing over her, saying clearly: “If you leave this family, we will bury you where no one will ever find you.”

The room erupted into shouts of absolute horror. High-society ladies covered their mouths in shock. Politicians immediately backed away from Gregory like he was radioactive.

Next on the screen came Clara’s sworn video testimony, followed by page after page of Patricia’s private blackmail ledgers, detailing every bribe paid to local officials—complete with names, dates, and account numbers.

“Turn it off! TURN IT OFF!” Patricia screamed, clawing at the podium, her aristocratic posture collapsing into sheer hysterical frenzy.

Gregory, seeing his entire life crumbling in seconds, snapped. He reached inside his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a small, snub-nosed revolver, aiming it straight at Abigail!

“You ruined us!” Gregory screamed, his finger tightening on the trigger!
