Chapter 5 - The Gala and the TrapThree weeks passed in a blur of silk, steel, and sleepless nights.

The federal investigation into Moreno Hospitality hadn't gone away, but the appointment of Nora as independent managing beneficiary had thrown a massive legal wrench into the government's freeze orders. To the public, the mysterious marriage was the scandal of the season—the ruthless billionaire marrying his penniless waitress. Society gossips whispered behind fans at country clubs; tabloids splashed their photos across front pages with headlines screaming CINDERELLA AND THE DON.

On a Friday night in May, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel hosted the annual Chicago Heritage Charity Gala.

Nora stood in front of the mirror in the master suite, staring at her reflection in absolute disbelief. The dress—delivered by courier from Paris three days prior—was a masterpiece of midnight-blue silk velvet that hugged her curves, cascading down to silver-heeled shoes. A diamond tennis bracelet sparkled around her wrist, cold and heavy.

The door opened, and Cade walked in. He wore a classic tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders with terrifying perfection. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw her.

For a moment, the untouchable crime lord looked entirely winded.

"Well," Cade breathed, walking up behind her. He stared at their reflection in the gilded mirror, his hands coming to rest gently on her bare shoulders. "The tabloids are going to have a field day tomorrow."

"I feel like I'm wearing a museum exhibit," Nora murmured, her fingers nervously tracing the edge of the velvet neckline.

"You look like a queen," Cade corrected, his voice dropping low, his lips brushing the shell of her ear. "And tonight, every vulture in this city is going to try to test the crown."

The gala was a sea of glittering chandeliers, clinking champagne flutes, and predatory smiles. As Cade and Nora entered the ballroom, the room's collective chatter dipped noticeably. Every eye in the room locked onto them.

Miriam Dent was standing near the ice sculpture, draped in white lace, looking like a ghost haunting a feast. When she saw Nora on the arm of Cade Moreno, her face drained of what little color it had left.

"Mr. Moreno! Mrs. Moreno!"

A sleek, silver-haired man approached them, cutting through the crowd with the practiced grace of a seasoned politician. It was Senator Arthur Vance—a man whose political campaigns had been quietly funded by Moreno Hospitality for a decade, and whose recent public statements had heavily favored cracking down on "organized financial corruption."

"Senator," Cade acknowledged, his voice flat, his posture stiffening by a fraction of an inch.

"Cade. And this must be the famous bride," Vance said, flashing a blinding, teeth-whitened smile as he turned his attention to Nora. He took her hand, holding it a fraction longer than social convention required, his eyes scanning her with cold appraisal. "Fascinating union. Quite the romantic fairy tale. One has to wonder, Mrs. Moreno... how does a simple waitress adapt to a world where people's lives can be rewritten with a single signature?"

Nora didn't flinch. She pulled her hand back smoothly, offering a cool, composed smile she hadn't known she possessed.

"It’s simple, Senator," Nora replied, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet circle of onlookers. "You just have to remember that people who hide behind nice suits and political titles are usually much less terrifying than the ones who tell you the truth to your face."

Senator Vance’s smile flickered, a dangerous glint flashing in his eyes. Before he could retort, a commotion erupted near the double doors at the entrance of the ballroom.

Flashbulbs popped blindingly. Four men in dark federal windbreakers marched into the hall, led by a tall, sharp-featured woman with a cold expression holding a buff-colored envelope.

"Cade Moreno," the federal agent called out, her voice cutting through the orchestra's music. "You are served with an emergency federal injunction and a warrant for asset seizure based on newly discovered obstruction charges. And Mrs. Moreno—you are subpoenaed to testify regarding the legitimacy of your marriage."

The ballroom erupted into sheer chaos. Cameras flashed like lightning storms. Whispers exploded into shouting.

Cade didn't blink. He didn't reach for his gun. Instead, he stepped directly in front of Nora, shielding her from the flashing lights and the prying eyes of the city's elite.

He looked down at Nora, a dark, dangerous smile playing at the corner of his lips.

"Hold on tight, sweetheart," Cade whispered over the rising din of the crowd. "Act Two is over. Time for the climax."
