Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the MachineJudge Harrison slid the USB drive into the secure, standalone evidence terminal built into his bench—a system completely isolated from outside networks to prevent tampering. The courtroom watched with bated breath as a loading bar crept slowly across the judge's private monitor.

Jonathan’s attorneys were in full panic mode now, huddled tightly around their client, whispering frantic legal strategies.

“Your Honor,” Jonathan’s lead counsel stammered, sweating through his expensive Italian suit. “We move for an immediate recess. This is an illegal wiretap violation, an invasion of privacy, and a breach of—”

“Counsel,” Judge Harrison interrupted without looking up from his screen. “When a nine-year-old child presents evidence of systemic witness tampering, perjury, and child psychological abuse within my jurisdiction, protocol takes a backseat to the truth. Let’s see what is on this drive.”

The judge clicked the mouse.

A directory folder popped up on the display, mirrored onto the large projection screen behind him for all to see.

Folder Name: REED_CLEANUP_2025.

Inside were dozens of subfolders, neatly organized by date, location, and name. But it was the first file at the top of the list that made the blood run cold across the entire room: an audio recording file titled Dr. Vance Payoff & Plan Confirmation.

Judge Harrison clicked play.

The courtroom speakers crackled to life, and the crisp, unmistakable voice of Dr. Gregory Vance—the court-appointed psychiatric evaluator who had testified just two days ago that I was emotionally unstable and unfit for custody—boomed through the room.

“Look, Jonathan, five hundred thousand is fine, but the offshore account needs to clear before I sign off on the final psychiatric assessment. If the judge reads my report, Sarah Carter won't stand a ghost of a chance of getting joint custody, let alone primary.”

Then came Jonathan’s smooth, arrogant voice in response:

“The transfer is already initiated to your Cayman account, Gregory. Just make sure she looks like a hysterical basket case. I want total victory. I want her broken so she signs away all visitation rights without a fight.”

Dr. Vance’s voice on the recording laughed heartily. “Done. Consider her legally dismantled.”

Victoria Reed slumped back in her seat, her face turning an alarming shade of pale grey. Savannah Blake crossed her arms defensively, refusing to look at the gallery where several reporters were already frantically scribbling notes.

As for Jonathan? All the color had completely drained from his face. He looked like a man who had just watched his entire empire implode in five seconds flat.

I sat frozen, tears streaming silently down my face. Not tears of sorrow anymore, but of a fierce, burning vindication. The ghosts that had haunted me for three agonizing years were finally being dragged out into the harsh, unforgiving light of day.
