Chapter 8 - A New Morning

Three days later, the mansion on the cliff looked entirely different.

The heavy velvet curtains in the dining hall had been pulled back, allowing warm morning sunlight to flood the massive mahogany table. The crystal chandelier sparkled, casting dancing rainbows across the walls.

For the first time in two years, two plates were set at the table.

And they weren't adult plates.

One was mine. The other was a small, bright pink plastic plate shaped like a star, piled high with scrambled eggs, buttered toast, and sliced strawberries.

Across from me sat Chloe, swinging her legs happily beneath her chair, wearing a teal dress that looked suspiciously familiar.

Standing beside her, pouring fresh orange juice, was Grace. Her eyes were bright, and for the first time since she had arrived at the mansion, there was no fear in them—only a deep, profound peace.

"Is Amara coming down to play today, Daddy?" Chloe asked around a mouthful of strawberries.

"She'll be here in five minutes, sweetheart," I smiled, a feeling of lightness settling into my chest that I hadn't felt since before the world went dark.

A soft knock sounded at the dining room door, and Amara peeked her head in, wearing matching teal ribbons in her dark curls.

"Mister Hale?" she asked shyly.

I looked up, a genuine smile touching my lips—a smile that nobody outside these walls would ever believe belonged to the feared mafia boss of the city.

"Come on in, Amara," I said, pulling out the chair right beside Chloe. "There's plenty of room at the table."

As the two little girls immediately began giggling and sharing strawberries, Grace stepped back toward the kitchen, wiping a quiet tear of relief from her cheek. I picked up my coffee cup, watching the sunlight bounce off the silver locket resting on the sideboard—closed forever, its secrets finally put to rest.
