The morning paper lay unfolded on the marble kitchen island, the bold headline screaming across the front page of the Arizona Business Journal:
FALL OF AN EMPIRE: HOW FORENSIC ACCOUNTING DISMANTLED HAYES HOLDINGS OVERNIGHT.
I skimmed the article casually, ignoring the paragraphs detailing the federal indictments, the disgraced patriarch, and my ex-husband’s impending trial. Those chapters of my life were closed, bound, and archived forever.
My laptop chimed with a notification from my new consulting firm—Vanguard Forensic & Financial Advisory, an independent boutique agency I had founded last month alongside Marcus Vance, specializing in protecting vulnerable spouses and exposing corporate corruption from the inside out. Our client list was already three months backed up, filled with high-net-worth individuals who, like me, had once been told they were nothing more than a footnote in someone else's empire.
“Mama!”
I looked up from the screen. Leo had managed to stand all on his own for three full seconds before wobbling and tumbling gently onto his soft padded mat, giggling with absolute delight.
I stood up, walked across the sunlit room, and scooped him up into my arms, burying my face in his soft baby curls. He wrapped his tiny arms tightly around my neck, holding on with pure, unconditional love.
