Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING IN THE BASEMENTDr. Marsh gasped for air, pinned beneath Mason’s knee in the damp concrete aisle.

"You're... you're making a mistake," Marsh choked out, her professional veneer completely shattered. "The board... the federal contracts... you'll spend the rest of your life in a military prison."
Mason didn't look at her. His dark eyes were fixed entirely on Sienna, who stood frozen against the lockers, clutching the cracked brass compass to her chest.
"You shouldn't have come down here, Mrs. Ashford," Mason said, his voice hard as iron. "They monitor these lower levels. Every camera down here feeds directly to the corporate security grid."
"She... she said my family's company caused the crash," Sienna stammered, her voice shaking for the first time in years. "She said the trial—"
"Your father’s company funded the tech that ruined my life and crippled half my unit," Mason interrupted quietly, standing up slowly while keeping Dr. Marsh pinned with the toe of his work boot. "And when the brass tried to sweep the side effects under the rug, I was the one who stole the medical logs to prove what they did to us."
He reached down, pulling a small, encrypted flash drive from Dr. Marsh’s coat pocket.
"And three years ago," Mason continued, looking straight into Sienna’s terrified eyes, "they tried to assassinate me on a rainy highway in Portland to get those files back. Only they missed my truck... and hit the SUV right behind me carrying you and your daughter."
The silence in the basement was absolute, save for the rhythmic dripping of a pipe in the corner.
The truth—monstrous, undeniable, and blood-soaked—settled over Sienna like a lead blanket. The accident that stole Ava’s voice hadn't been an act of God. It was collateral damage in a corporate war that had been raging long before Ava was even born.
"I didn't know," Sienna whispered, tears finally breaking free and spilling down her cheeks. "I swear to God, I didn't know."
"I know you didn't," Mason said, his expression softening just a fraction. "That's why I stayed. That's why I kept an eye on her."

Suddenly, the red emergency alarm lights on the basement wall began to strobe violently. A robotic voice blared from the overhead speakers: “Facility lockdown initiated. Unauthorized access detected in Sector Four.”
"They're coming," Mason said, grabbing Sienna by the arm. "We have to move. Now."
