Chapter 9 - The ReckoningThe federal investigator walked straight up the steps of the stage, ignoring Richard Reed’s sputtering protests, and handed a heavy manila folder directly to Graham.

"Mr. Reed," the agent said, his voice loud enough to carry through the live broadcast microphones. "We’ve received the complete bloodline ledger and financial audit transmitted from the orbital relay at 6:45 AM. The freeze orders on all Southwest Transit shell accounts have been executed nationwide."

Richard Reed stood frozen beside the podium, his silver cane slipping from his trembling fingers to clatter loudly against the stage floor. The impenetrable aura of untouchable wealth and corporate invulnerability that had protected him for decades dissolved in real-time under the glare of national television cameras.

"This is a coup," Richard rasped, his voice cracking with venom as he pointed a shaking finger at Graham. "He forged those documents! He conspired with an unauthorized employee—that nameless orphan standing in the back—to seize control of the board!"

"Her name is Avery Vance," Graham said, his voice dropping an octave, ringing with cold, absolute fury across the silent auditorium. "And she isn't a nameless employee. She is my legal, lawfully wedded wife."

The entire ballroom went dead silent.

Reporters stopped typing. Flashbulbs paused. Even the federal agents looked over in mild surprise.

Graham turned his head, locking his dark eyes onto mine across the crowded room, and held up his left hand. The platinum wedding band caught the studio lights, gleaming like a beacon.

"Under Nevada spousal privilege statutes," Graham continued, never breaking eye contact with me, "she cannot be compelled to testify against me. But as my wife, she holds joint voting power over every share of Reed Global stock I own. Which means as of three hours ago, Richard Reed no longer has a single vote on this board."

Marcus Vance tried to slip quietly through the side exit near the media risers, but two local police officers who had just entered through the service doors stepped directly into his path, clicking steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp clack.

Richard slumped against the podium, defeated, his empire crashing down around him like a house of cards built on blood and forged signatures.

"Take him away," the federal agent instructed quietly, motioning to the guards.

As Richard was led down the stage steps in disgrace, his head bowed, his legacy burned to ash by the very ghosts he thought he had buried, the cameras slowly panned away from him and focused entirely on the stage.

And on me.

I stood at the edge of the stage, the heavy hotel robe still wrapped around my shoulders, the morning sun finally breaking fully through the enormous glass windows of the grand ballroom, casting a golden halo across the floor.

Graham walked down the steps, bypassed the microphones, the reporters, and the federal agents, and stopped right in front of me.

He reached out, his fingers gently brushing against my hand, tracing the cool metal of the platinum ring on my finger.

"Well," Graham said softly, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth for the first time since I met him. "That was quite a breakfast date."
