Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING AT SUB-BASEMENT 2

Ethan descended the spiral steel staircase into the deep sub-basement beneath the wine cellar. The air grew cold, smelling of concrete, damp earth, and ozone.

At the end of a long, narrow corridor stood a reinforced titanium blast door—the kind designed to survive a direct bomb strike.

Standing beside the digital control pad was Victor Blackwood.

In his right hand, he held a heavy snub-nosed revolver. In his left hand, he held a sleek black detonator with a glowing red LED light.

Behind the small, bulletproof glass window of the blast door, Ethan could see her.

Claire.

She was bound to a heavy wooden chair, her face bruised but conscious. Her eyes widened in terror as she saw Ethan step into the corridor. She began thrashing against her restraints, mouthing the words: NO! RUN! IT'S A TRAP!

Victor Blackwood adjusted his tie, his voice calm, echoing through the cold concrete hallway.

"Impressive, Ethan. Truly impressive. I always knew you were a dangerous animal. That's why I tried to have you buried in Oregon."

"It's over, Victor," Ethan said, dropping his rifle to his side, showing his open palms. "Your sons are down. Your security force is wiped out. The feds are raiding your hospital site right now. You have no cards left to play."

Victor laughed—a dark, dry sound that rattled off the damp walls.

"You think this was about money? You think I care about cartel debts?" Victor took a step closer to the blast door. "Claire was going to expose forty years of Blackwood records to the Department of Justice! She was going to destroy everything I built! My legacy! My empire!"

"She's your daughter!" Ethan shouted, his voice cracking with raw emotion.

"She was a Blackwood!" Victor roared back. "And in this family, the pack survives by cutting off any limb that rots! She chose you—a penniless soldier—over her own blood!"

Victor raised the detonator, his thumb resting lightly on the red toggle switch.

"If I can't control her, no one will," Victor whispered. "Step back, Ethan, or I press this button right now, and we all turn to dust."

Ethan looked past Victor, locking eyes with Claire through the thick glass window.

In that fraction of a second, without uttering a word, a lifetime of understanding passed between husband and wife. Claire stopped thrashing. She looked at Ethan, nodded slowly, and shifted her weight subtly to the left side of the heavy chair she was strapped to.

She wasn't just waiting to be saved. She was waiting for her signal.

Ethan took a slow step backward, lowering his head as if in surrender.

"You win, Victor," Ethan said softly. "Just let me say goodbye to her."

Victor sneered, raising his revolver, aiming it directly at Ethan’s head. "Say it fast, soldier."

Ethan's hand moved faster than the human eye could process.

He didn't draw a gun. He pulled a compact, high-frequency flashbang grenade from his rear belt loop, pulled the pin with his thumb, and dropped it directly at his own feet while shutting his eyes and covering his ears.

BLINDING FLASH. DEAFENING THUNDER.

170 decibels of sound and two million candlepower of light erupted in the enclosed concrete tunnel.

Victor screamed, blinded instantly, his nervous system overwhelmed. He stumbled backward, firing his revolver wildly into the dark, his thumb reflexively pressing down on the detonator switch!
