Chapter 3 - THE RECKONING IN THE CORRIDORHarrison stood up slowly, towering over her by a foot, his chest tight with a mixture of rage, guilt, and profound shock.

"You didn't leave New York," Harrison said, his voice dropping into a harsh, controlled whisper so as not to wake the children. "You stayed. And you had my children. Why didn't you ever call me, Clare?"
Clare bristled instantly, stepping back as if she had been struck. Her eyes flashed with sudden, fiery anger.
"Call you?" Clare hissed back, pointing a shaking finger at him. "With what phone, Harrison? Your father’s security team intercepted me outside my apartment forty-eight hours after you walked out! They threw a stack of nondisclosure agreements in my face, threatened to have me evicted, and told me that if I ever breathed a word about my pregnancy to you, they would ensure I never found a job or a home in this country again!"
Harrison stepped back as if physical blow had hit him. "My father... did that?"
"He protected your precious legacy!" Clare’s voice cracked with years of buried pain. "He made sure the future CEO of Blackwell Industries wasn't burdened by a poor girl from the Bronx and her unborn babies. I raised Arya and Tyler entirely on my own, working three cleaning jobs just to keep a roof over their heads, while you built an empire on Wall Street!"
She turned away, burying her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking. "I didn't want your money, Harrison. I didn't want your pity. That’s why I never called. But today... today my children almost died in a hunting snare on public land because we were evicted from our apartment this morning and had to sleep in the park woods. Are you happy now? Is your portfolio safe?"
Harrison felt as though his entire world had just collapsed inward. Every corporate victory, every billion-dollar acquisition, every sleepless night spent climbing the ladder of power suddenly tasted like ash.
He reached out, his hand hovering over her shoulder before dropping back to his side.
"Clare," he said, his voice thick with raw emotion. "I swear to you... I knew nothing about this. But from this second forward, everything changes. You and the children are coming with me."
"And your wife?" Clare asked bitterly, looking straight into his eyes. "What does Victoria say about your sudden, inconvenient family?"
Before Harrison could answer, his phone buzzed violently in his pocket again.

He pulled it out. The caller ID flashed a name that made his blood run cold.
Victoria.
