CHAPTER 1 — The Fight Nobody Could Stop

The prison yard fell silent.
More than three hundred inmates formed a massive circle beneath the blazing afternoon sun, waiting for the quickest fight of the year. Some were already taking bets. Others couldn't even look away.
Standing in the center was Brutus Kane—the prison's undefeated giant.
At nearly seven feet tall, weighing over 350 pounds, Brutus had broken ribs, shattered jaws, and crushed every challenger foolish enough to step inside the circle. Rumor said he'd once knocked out three inmates in less than a minute.
Then the crowd burst into laughter.
Walking toward him wasn't another heavyweight.
It was Emily Carter.
A young woman barely five-foot-three, wearing an oversized prison uniform and old sneakers. Her wrists were bruised from handcuffs, her face calm, almost emotionless.
Someone shouted from the crowd.
"She's going to die before dinner!"
Another inmate laughed.
"Maybe Brutus will finish her with one finger!"
Even several guards exchanged confused looks.
No woman had ever volunteered to fight Brutus.
Not one.
The fight organizer stepped forward.
"You still have time to walk away."
Emily didn't even blink.
"I'm staying."
The organizer frowned.
"You understand he doesn't stop once the fight starts?"
"I know."
"And if you lose..."
Emily slowly lifted her eyes toward the giant standing across from her.
"I won't."
The entire prison exploded with laughter.
Even Brutus smirked.
"You've got courage," he said.
"But courage doesn't survive in here."
Emily quietly removed the thin prison jacket from her shoulders and folded it neatly on the ground.
No shaking.
No fear.
No hesitation.
That was the first thing that made Brutus slightly uncomfortable.
Most challengers couldn't stop trembling.
She looked... prepared.
Brutus stepped closer until his enormous shadow completely covered her.
"I'll make this quick."
Emily looked directly into his eyes.
"No."
"You'll make your biggest mistake."
The crowd roared again.
Brutus cracked his neck, rolled his shoulders, and raised both fists.
Everyone expected Emily to immediately take a defensive stance.
Instead...
She lowered both hands.
Completely.
Leaving her face wide open.
The spectators froze.
"What is she doing?"
"Is she crazy?"
Even Brutus frowned.
"Raise your guard."
Emily slowly shook her head.
"I won't throw the first punch."
Brutus narrowed his eyes.
"You think this is some kind of game?"
"No."
"It's a test."
The words echoed across the silent yard.
For the first time in years, the giant hesitated.
There was something in her voice.
Not confidence.
Not arrogance.
Certainty.
As if she already knew exactly how this fight would end.
A prison siren echoed in the distance.
The referee raised one hand.
"Three..."
The inmates leaned forward.
"Two..."
Brutus clenched his fists.
Emily never moved.
"One..."
The whistle screamed through the yard.
Brutus exploded forward like a charging bull.
The crowd expected to witness the shortest fight in prison history.
But just as his massive fist came within inches of Emily's face...
She whispered five words that only Brutus could hear.
"You remember Black Ridge, don't you?"
The giant stopped.
Completely.
His fist froze in midair.
His face instantly turned pale.
And for the first time anyone could remember...

The most feared man in the prison looked terrified.
