Chapter 6 - THE RETRIBUTION FILE

Three weeks later. A cheap, run-down motel room on the outskirts of the city.

The television flickered with local news coverage. Rosa sat on the edge of the sagging mattress, her eyes glued to the screen while Lily slept soundly in the bed beside her.

“...and in local society news, the upcoming wedding of Julian Whitmore and corporate heiress Vivien Cole has been postponed following an unexpected police raid at Whitmore Manor early this morning...”

Rosa gasped, dropping the remote control.

Footage played across the screen: police cars with flashing blue lights surrounding the grand iron gates of the estate. Handcuffs gleaming in the morning light as detectives led Charles Vance and two estate guards away.

“...authorities acting on an anonymous digital tip containing financial records and audio confessions have reopened the investigation into the sudden death of matriarch Margaret Whitmore. Investigators have confirmed that murder charges are pending against multiple individuals within the household...”

An anonymous digital tip.

Rosa stared at her laptop sitting on the tiny laminate table. Before fleeing the estate that night, she hadn't just run—she had gone into Charles’s office while they were searching the west wing and copied every encrypted file from his desk computer onto a flash drive, including the audio recordings of Julian and Vivien plotting the murder.

She had mailed it anonymously to the state prosecutor’s office from a payphone fifty miles away.

She had won. The monsters were finally caged.

Rosa let out a long, shuddering breath of relief, tears of vindication spilling over her cheeks. She walked over to the bed, stroked Lily’s soft hair, and whispered, “It’s over, baby. We’re safe.”
