Chapter 9 - A New EmpireBy the end of the month, the landscape of the city’s high-society and underground syndicates had fundamentally shifted. The municipal shipping yards that Judge Davies had tried to weaponize against Roman were now fully under Costa logistics control, secured by transparent contracts and clean municipal oversight managed by a newly appointed board of directors.

And I wasn't just managing the floor at the Continental anymore. Roman had formally brought me on as his chief financial strategist, giving me an office down the hall from his own and a stake in the very empire Caleb had once sneered at.

On a rainy Friday evening, the two of us stood on the private terrace of Roman’s penthouse, watching the city lights streak against the rain-slicked glass below. The neon signs of the financial district blinked through the mist, a vast, complicated machine of money, power, and ambition.

"You know," Roman said, resting his forearms against the glass railing beside mine, "when you walked into my office six months ago holding that ledger with ink-stained fingers, I didn't think you'd end up owning half my portfolio by the end of the year."

"You didn't hire me for my portfolio," I replied, turning my head to look at him. "You hired me because you knew I wouldn't flinch when things got complicated."

Roman turned toward me, his dark eyes catching the amber glow of the penthouse lights. There was no teasing edge in his voice now, no calculated business negotiation.

"No," Roman said quietly, reaching out to brush a stray strand of hair away from my cheek. "I brought you into my world because you were already surviving a war zone. I just gave you the weapons to fight back."

I leaned into his touch, feeling the steady, solid warmth of a man who never made promises he couldn't keep—and never backed down from a fight. The ghost of Caleb Reynolds and the suffocating pressure of a disgraced surname were completely gone, buried under the weight of a new life we had built together.

"So," I smiled, tilting my chin up. "What’s our next acquisition, Mr. Costa?"

May you like

Roman’s lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile as he pulled me closer against his side.

"Let's check the ledgers," he murmured, "and find out who thinks they're untouchable."
