Chapter 6 - THE TRAP CLOSES"You're insane," I said, my voice dropping to a low growl as I backed up against the open safe.

Linda didn't flinch. She simply took another unhurried sip of her coffee, her eyes scanning the open folders scattered across the desk.

"Insane? No, Ethan. I am protective," Linda corrected smoothly, setting her mug down on the mahogany surface with a sharp clink. "I built this family empire from the ground up after your father proved himself too weak to handle the pressures of real business. I made sure you had Ivy League schooling, a high-paying executive career, and a comfortable life. And how do you repay me? By marrying a common, manipulative nobody who tried to turn you against your own blood."

"Emily didn't turn me against you—you did that all on your own," I shot back, stepping out from behind the desk, keeping my distance. "You starved my wife, you abused my newborn son, and you conspired with Marcus to steal everything I worked for!"

Linda’s expression darkened, the polite veneer slipping away to reveal the cold, calculating narcissist underneath.

"Marcus is ambitious. He understands how the world works. Power doesn't belong to the sentimental; it belongs to the merciless," she hissed, stepping closer. "And as for your wife? She was a parasite clinging to our bloodline. But don't worry, Ethan. By the time the federal marshals finish processing the corporate embezzlement charges Marcus filed against you this morning, you won't have to worry about Emily or the baby anymore. You'll be spending the next twenty years behind federal prison bars while Marcus and I legally dissolve your marriage and put Noah into a proper state-approved guardianship facility."

My vision blurred with a red haze of pure, blinding fury. For five seconds, the urge to lunge across that room and wipe the smug smirk off her face surged through every vein in my body.

Then, the heavy click of my phone recording app hidden in my jacket pocket vibrated softly against my ribs.

I had her.

Every word she had just spoken—her confession about the conspiracy with Marcus, the framing of embezzlement, the plot to steal my son—was being broadcast in real-time directly to Detective Sarah Ortiz’s secure dispatch server via an encrypted live-stream link I had set up the moment I accessed the Wi-Fi router downstairs.

"You really think the police are going to arrest me when I hand them this audio file?" I asked, holding my ground, letting a calculated edge of exhaustion creep into my voice to keep her talking.

Linda laughed—a sharp, shrill sound that echoed off the mahogany paneling. "Police? Ethan, darling, look outside."

I glanced past her toward the tall french windows overlooking the front courtyard.

Two unmarked black SUVs with flashing red and blue lights embedded in their grilles had just pulled up the gravel driveway. Four armed federal marshals stepped out, their tactical vests clearly displaying FBI FINANCIAL CRIMES TASK FORCE.

"They aren't here to arrest me, Ethan," Linda smiled, her eyes gleaming with absolute victory. "They're here to arrest you. For grand larceny, corporate fraud, and breaking and entering."

The heavy front door downstairs slammed open, followed by the heavy thud of tactical boots marching up the grand staircase.

"Federal agents! Stay where you are!" a booming voice echoed down the hallway.

Linda turned toward the open doorway, raising her voice into a theatrical, trembling pitch of performative distress. "Help! In here! My son broke into my safe, he’s threatening me, and he has stolen confidential corporate files!"

The study door pushed wide open. Detective Sarah Ortiz strode into the room, flanked by two armed federal agents with their service weapons drawn and ready.

Officer Ortiz scanned the room, her eyes darting from Linda’s feigned expression of terror to my calm, resolute posture standing beside the open wall safe.

"Ethan Brooks," Ortiz stated clearly, her voice echoing in the tense silence. "Step away from the desk and put your hands behind your back."

Linda covered her mouth with her hand, pretending to sob. "Thank God you're here, Detective. He’s completely unhinged."

I didn't move. I didn't raise my hands. Instead, I slowly reached into my jacket pocket, pulled out my smartphone, and tapped the screen to stop the live audio stream.

"Detective Ortiz," I said calmly, stepping forward and holding the phone out toward her. "Before you read me my rights, you might want to listen to the last three minutes of cloud audio currently timestamped and backed up on the Kansas City Police Department’s secure evidentiary server."

Detective Ortiz paused, her hand hovering over her handcuffs. She looked at me, then slowly lowered her weapon, stepping forward to take the phone from my hand.

Linda’s smug smile faltered for the first time. "What is that? Don't listen to him, he’s lying—"

Detective Ortiz pressed play.

The clear, unmistakable voice of Linda Brooks filled the quiet study, echoing off the wood paneling: “...Marcus posted bail for both of us an hour ago... Marcus is ambitious... We conspired to frame you for embezzlement, liquidate company assets, and split the proceeds... and put Noah into a proper state-approved guardianship facility.”

The audio played on, capturing every single word of her unprompted confession in crystal-clear digital fidelity.

The room fell dead silent. The federal agents shifted uncomfortably, their eyes snapping from Linda back to Detective Ortiz.

Detective Ortiz hit pause, slow-turning her gaze away from the phone screen and fixing it entirely on my mother.

"Linda Brooks," Detective Ortiz said, her voice dripping with cold professional satisfaction as she snapped her handcuffs off her belt. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
