Chapter 9 - AFTERMATH AND ALLIANCESForty-eight hours later, the world had changed completely.

In a secure, high-rise safehouse overlooking the glittering skyline of Philadelphia, Natalie sat on a plush velvet sofa, drinking hot chamomile tea. Liam was in the next room, happily watching cartoons on a giant flat-screen TV, completely unaware that his mother had just become a millionaire overnight.

The flash drive Dante had handed over to federal authorities had triggered a massive, coordinated FBI raid across the East Coast. Viktor Moretti and his entire inner circle were currently sitting in federal holding cells, facing life without parole for racketeering, money laundering, and conspiracy.

The door opened, and Dante walked into the room. He was dressed in a pristine, perfectly tailored charcoal suit, his posture straight, though he still moved with a slight stiffness from the healing abdominal wound. The dark bruises on his face were fading into faint shades of yellow and green.

He walked over and placed a thick manila folder on the coffee table in front of Natalie.

“What’s this?” Natalie asked, looking up at him.

“Your new life,” Dante said calmly, taking a seat across from her. “The cabin in Carbon County is yours, free and clear, though I wouldn't recommend living there anymore. Inside that folder is a deed to a five-bedroom home in a gated community outside Philadelphia, full medical and college trust funds for Liam, and a consulting contract with my security firm that pays twenty grand a month for doing absolutely nothing.”

Natalie stared at the folder, stunned into silence. She looked up into Dante’s piercing gray eyes. “Dante... I can’t accept this. I saved your life, yes, but this is...”

“Payment in full,” Dante interrupted gently. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “When I was lying in that dirt, bleeding out in the freezing rain, I thought that was the end of my story. I thought the wolves had finally won. But a single mother with every reason to run chose to stand her ground and pull me out.”

He reached out, placing a hand gently over hers. His touch was warm, steady, and grounding.

“You gave me back my life, Natalie. Let me give you back yours.”

Before Natalie could formulate a response, Goliath trotted into the room from the kitchen, tail wagging slowly, holding a rubber toy in his massive jaws. He dropped the toy at Dante’s feet and let out a welcoming huff, completely adopting the mob boss into the family pack.

Dante chuckled, picking up the toy and tossing it across the penthouse floor. Goliath lumbered after it with surprising speed.

Natalie smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that reached her eyes for the first time in years. She looked at the man who was once a feared syndicate boss, and realized that beneath the armor, the scars, and the blood, she had found something she never expected in the dark woods of Carbon County.
