Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Machine

Who sent the note?
During the lunch recess, my mother and I sat in a quiet corner of the courthouse cafeteria. "Ava, what does 'Building 4' mean?" my mother whispered, looking nervously over her shoulder.
"Crestwood Preparatory has four main structures," I replied, scanning the floor plan printed on the back of a school brochure. "Building 1 is administration. Building 2 is academics. Building 3 is athletics. Building 4..."
I stopped. My blood ran cold.
"Building 4 is the new Science and Technology Center," I muttered. "The fifty-million-dollar facility funded by private donors last year."
"What does a science building have to do with spoiled food in the cafeteria?" my mother asked.
"I don't know yet," I said, pulling out my necklace flash drive. "But whoever wrote that note knows something huge. Mom, we need to get inside Building 4."
"Ava, no! That’s trespassing! If they catch us—"
"They won't catch us," a soft, raspy voice spoke from behind us.
We turned around. Standing there was an elderly woman wearing a janitor’s uniform, holding a mop bucket. Her name tag read MARTHA.
"Martha?" my mother gasped. "You still work there?"
"Not for long," Martha whispered, leaning in close. "Lydia, listen to me. What you found in the kitchen was just the tip of the iceberg. Hale wasn't just cutting costs on food to pocket extra money. He was skimming millions off the school’s construction budget."
"Construction budget?" I asked, my mind racing.
"Building 4 was built using substandard materials, toxic insulation, and uncertified structural steel," Martha revealed, her eyes filled with fear. "They bribed the city inspectors to pass it. The air filtration system in that building is circulating chemical toxins right into the classrooms. They fired Lydia because she overheard Hale talking to the contractor about paying off the health inspector!"
Everything suddenly clicked into place. The spoiled food wasn't the main crime—it was just a symptom of a massive, systemic corruption network involving millions of dollars!
"Why are you telling us this, Martha?" I asked.
"Because my grandson goes to that school," Martha’s voice broke with emotion. "He’s in Building 4 every single day. They are poisoning our kids for profit, Ava. You have to stop them."
Martha slipped a silver keycard into my palm. "This opens the basement archive in Building 4. The real construction blueprints and audit logs are stored there. Get them before Hale’s men destroy everything tonight."
May you like
"Tonight?" I asked.
"Hale knows the judge ordered an audit," Martha warned. "He’s scheduled an 'accidental' electrical fire in Building 4 at midnight to burn all the evidence to the ground."
