Chapter 8 - Beyond the Iron Gates

The riverfront park was alive with the amber hues of dusk. Families walked along the paved pathways, children laughed near the fountains, and the distant skyline of Manhattan sparkled like a field of scattered diamonds against the darkening indigo sky.
For six years, Dominic Patterson had viewed this world as a hostile wasteland filled with hidden dangers and sudden wreckage. Every passing car, every uneven patch of pavement, every gust of wind had felt like a threat to the only piece of Clara he had left alive.
Now, as he walked beside the titanium wheelchair pushing smoothly along the concrete path, the world felt entirely different. It was wide, it was unpredictable, and it was breathtakingly alive.
Ryan stopped the chair near the stone retaining wall overlooking the river, gripping the push-rims as he stared out at the shimmering water.
“Dad?” Ryan asked quietly, not looking back.
“Yeah, sport?” Dominic answered, stepping up beside him, resting his hand gently on his son’s shoulder.
“Do you think we’ll ever see Norah again?”
Dominic looked out across the horizon, where a sleek, unmarked black sedan was parked discreetly near the park exit, its engine idling softly before pulling away into the evening traffic. He smiled faintly, feeling a profound sense of peace settle over his chest for the first time in six agonizing years.
“No, Ryan,” Dominic said softly, his thumb resting reassuringly on his son’s shoulder. “People like Norah don't stick around in fortresses. They dismantle them so you can build something better.”
Ryan nodded slowly. He reached down, gripped the rubber rims of his wheels with his own hands, and spun the chair around to face the long, open path stretching out ahead of them into the golden light.

“Good,” Ryan said, his voice ringing with a fierce, unbreakable resolve. “Because we don't need a fortress anymore.”
Father and son turned forward, moving side by side down the open path, leaving the shadows of the past far behind them as the city lights flickered on to guide their way.
