Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Broken LedgerThe grand mahogany doors of the Grand Alder ballroom closed behind them with a heavy, muffled thud, cutting off the collective gasp of four hundred paralyzed socialites.

Inside the quiet hallway, the air smelled of rain, expensive cologne, and the faint, coppery tang of absolute panic.

Sloan Hayes stood shoulder to shoulder with Dante Valente, her fingers still interlaced with his. The seafoam-green silk of her bridesmaid dress brushed against his tailored midnight-blue trouser leg as they paused by the marble pillars.

“You didn’t have to buy the entire company, Dante,” Sloan whispered, her voice barely carrying over the distant hum of the hotel's climate control system. Her heart was a frantic drum against her ribs, but her eyes—sharp, analytical, and completely composed—studied his profile.

Dante turned his head slowly, looking down at her with a dark, intense gaze that could melt steel. A faint, knowing smirk touched the corner of his mouth.

“Your father didn’t leave me a choice, cara,” Dante replied, his deep, resonant voice vibrating through the empty corridor. “For three years, he treated you like an unpaid ghost behind a desk while taking credit for every algorithm, ledger, and logistics optimization you engineered. If I left Hayes Freight in his hands for one more month, he would have sold your labor to the highest bidder just to pay for Paige’s second honeymoon.”

Sloan felt a hot rush of vindication wash over her. It was true. For years, Richard Hayes had paraded Paige around like a trophy princess while keeping Sloan locked in the basement office with three monitors, a mountain of tax loopholes, and a cold cup of coffee.

“And what happens now?” Sloan asked, raising her chin. “To my father? To the Bellamy merger?”

“The Bellamy merger is currently burning to ash in a dumpster behind the catering hall,” Dante said smoothly, turning her hand over and pressing a brief, firm kiss to the back of her knuckles. “As for your father... he is about to learn what happens when a man tries to build an empire on stolen columns.”

Before Sloan could respond, the heavy ballroom doors burst open.

Richard Hayes rushed out, his face purple with rage, his expensive tuxedo jacket askew. Behind him stood Carter Bellamy, looking like he was about to vomit on the polished marble floor.

“Valente!” Richard bellowed, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. “You can’t just walk in here and abduct my daughter—!”

“She isn't your property, Richard,” Dante cut him off, his voice dropping an octave into a tone so lethally cold that Richard actually stepped backward. “And neither is Hayes Freight. You have twenty-four hours to clear your personal belongings out of the downtown office. After that, the locks change.”

Richard clutched his chest, gasping for breath. “You’re ruining us... you’re ruining everything!”

“No, Richard,” Sloan spoke up, stepping out from the shadow of Dante’s shoulder with a cold, terrifying smile that her father had never seen before. “I am. And I did it entirely by balancing your books.”
