Chapter 8 - THE FINAL RULINGThe silence in the courtroom before the verdict was delivered felt heavier than lead.

Judge Sterling cleared his throat.
"This court has reviewed the filings, the financial history of desertion, and the psychological evaluation of the minors," Judge Sterling announced, his voice steady and severe. "Mr. Miller, your petition for joint custody is denied with prejudice."
David let out a sharp gasp. "You can't do that! I have biological rights!"
"You forfeited those rights the moment you walked out of a maternity ward and spent six years hiding from your legal obligations," Judge Sterling replied coldly. "Furthermore, your petition for visitation is denied pending a court-ordered psychological assessment and full repayment of back child support—estimated at eighty-four thousand dollars, plus interest."
David’s face drained completely of color. He looked at his lawyers, who were already packing up their briefcases, shaking their heads in silent resignation.
"As for the matter of guardianship," Judge Sterling continued, looking directly at Julian and Rebecca, "Mr. Carter has filed a formal petition for stepparent adoption, supported by the mother and substantiated by the profound bond demonstrated with the children. Given the circumstances, this court finds it in the best interest of the children to grant the petition to proceed on an expedited track."
