CHAPTER 3 — THE WOMAN WHO PLANNED EVERY DEATH

Daniel couldn't move.

His own mother stood in the doorway with a pistol in one hand and a cold smile on her face.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The only sound was the distant wedding music still echoing through the mansion, as if the celebration downstairs belonged to another world.

"Mom..." Daniel whispered. "What are you doing?"

She sighed.

"I was hoping you'd never open this room."

Michael slowly raised his hands.

"Put the gun down, Mother."

She laughed softly.

"You always were the obedient son."

Emily stood in front of Daniel.

"No..." she said quietly. "He's the son you could never control."

Daniel looked from Michael to his mother.

His entire life suddenly felt like a lie.

"You knew?" he asked Michael.

Michael nodded.

"I've known for years."

Daniel's fists clenched.

"You let me believe Anna died in a car accident!"

"I was trying to keep you alive!" Michael shouted. "Every person who learned the truth disappeared."

Daniel stared at him.

"You should have trusted me."

"I couldn't."

Michael looked directly into his brother's eyes.

"Because I didn't know if Mother would kill you... or make you become just like Father."

The words hit Daniel harder than a punch.

"What does Dad have to do with this?"

Their mother smiled.

"Everything."

She walked toward the glass case containing Anna's bloodstained wedding dress.

"You boys always believed your father built this family's fortune through hard work."

She gently touched the glass.

"He built it with blackmail... bribery... and murder."

Daniel felt sick.

"No..."

"Oh yes."

She opened a hidden drawer beneath the display.

Inside were dozens of passports.

Stacks of cash.

Several fake identities.

And a thick leather notebook.

Emily gasped.

"The ledger..."

Their mother nodded proudly.

"Every secret payment. Every politician. Every judge. Every witness who disappeared."

Daniel's hands shook as he flipped through the pages.

Names.

Dates.

Bank accounts.

Photographs.

Even Anna's name.

Beside it were two chilling words.

Target Eliminated.

Daniel nearly collapsed.

"You..."

His voice cracked.

"You ordered her death."

"I had no choice," his mother replied calmly.

"She found this room a week before the wedding."

Emily stepped forward.

"And I found Anna's diary."

Their mother's expression changed for the first time.

"You what?"

Emily slowly removed a small journal from inside her wedding bouquet.

"I've had it since the day I met Daniel."

Michael stared at her.

"You never told me."

"I couldn't."

Emily opened the diary.

"Anna wrote everything."

Every meeting.

Every threat.

Every crime.

And one final sentence.

"If anything happens to me... never trust Daniel's mother."

Their mother's smile disappeared.

"Give me that diary."

Emily refused.

The woman raised the gun.

"I won't ask twice."

Before she could pull the trigger—

BANG!

Another gunshot echoed through the room.

But it hadn't come from her weapon.

She looked down.

Blood spread across her white silk sleeve.

She had been shot in the shoulder.

Everyone turned toward the doorway.

An elderly man stood there holding an old revolver.

Daniel's eyes widened.

"Dad?"

The entire room froze.

His father had supposedly died ten years ago.

Yet there he stood.

Older.

Thinner.

Scarred.

Alive.

He lowered the revolver slowly.

Then he looked directly at Daniel and said,

"I'm not here to save your mother."

He pointed at Emily.

"I'm here because she's the one who has been lying to all of you."

Emily's face turned completely white.

The diary slipped from her hands.

And inside it...

A photograph fell onto the floor.

It showed Emily...

Standing beside Anna...

Just three days before Anna died.

Neither Daniel nor Michael had ever seen that picture before.

Emily closed her eyes.

Then she whispered the words that shattered everyone in the room.

May you like

"I never came into your life by accident."
