Chapter 37 - Rebuilding the Threshold

Two weeks later, the stone cottage looked better than it had before.
We didn't just repair the front entryway; we completely redesigned it. A heavy, reinforced ironwood door with triple deadbolts and a custom stained-glass window depicting a pair of soaring golden eagles—designed jointly by Jordan and Justin using their kindergarten art projects—now stood as a symbol of protection and renewal.
Morrison Dynamics had weathered the final corporate storm. The shadow board members had been indicted under federal racketeering and conspiracy charges, their assets seized to establish a permanent educational and safety trust for children affected by corporate and domestic trauma.
I sat at my executive desk in Manhattan on a crisp October afternoon, reviewing the final merger documents for the Lauren Memorial Tech Fellowship. The door to my office opened quietly.
Annie stepped inside, holding a small cardboard box labeled THE FINAL MOVE.
“Are you officially closing your Manhattan apartment?” I asked, smiling as I leaned back in my chair.
“Every last box,” Annie said, walking over and setting the box down on my desk. She placed her hands flat on the mahogany surface, leaning in close. “The cottage is officially our permanent address. And the boys have already decorated my bedroom door with three layers of blue painter's tape and a sign that says DO NOT DISTURB THE QUEEN OF CLEAN.”
I laughed, standing up from my chair and walking around the desk to pull her into my arms.

“Just an ordinary housekeeper, Mr. Morrison,” Annie whispered, smiling as she wrapped her arms around my neck, pulling me down into a long, tender kiss that erased every lingering shadow of the past.
