Chapter 4 - The Warden's GambleThe execution chamber of Rimfield Correctional was a sterile, windowless cube painted a sickly, institutional pale green. In the center sat the heavy steel gurney, its leather straps hanging limp like dead snakes.

At 1:35 PM, Warden Eleanor Boyd walked into the chamber alone, her boots clicking sharply against the freshly waxed floor. She didn't look at the executioner standing by the automated pump panel, nor did she look at the medical officer checking the saline drip lines.

She walked straight to the small viewing room separated by a thick pane of soundproof glass, where two federal marshals stood with their arms crossed.

"Warden Boyd," Marshal Vance-Smythe—a tall, humorless man with graying temples—said without turning his head. "We have twenty-five minutes until the transport team brings the prisoner down. I trust everything is in order?"

"The prisoner isn't coming down, Marshal," Eleanor said, her voice completely level.

Vance-Smythe turned slowly, his eyebrows arching toward his hairline. "Excuse me? The Department of Justice signed off on this execution twelve hours ago. Are you refusing a federal order?"

"I am not refusing an order," Eleanor replied, pulling a folded document from her breast pocket and tossing it onto the wooden viewing desk. "I am executing Section 4, Paragraph 12 of the New Jersey State Correctional Emergency Powers Act. Any prisoner whose conviction is directly implicated by newly recovered physical evidence verified by state law enforcement agencies is subject to an immediate administrative hold pending a mandatory judicial review."

The marshal snatched up the paper, his eyes scanning the dense legal jargon with mounting fury. "This is a state statute! Castellano was convicted in a federal court under federal racketeering statues! State emergency powers do not trump federal—"

"They do," Eleanor interrupted, her voice cutting through his protest like a scalpel, "when the crime occurred within municipal boundaries under state jurisdiction, and when the lead federal prosecutor has just been arrested by the State Police for tampering with state evidence and withholding a murder weapon."

She pointed a finger through the glass toward the television mounted in the hallway outside, where the live broadcast was now showing Gerald Whitlock being shoved into the back of a black-and-white cruiser, his designer suit wrinkled, his hands cuffed behind his back as flashbulbs popped like lightning storms.

"You can call Washington all you want, Marshal," Eleanor said, turning on her heel toward the heavy steel door. "But if you try to drag Raphael Castellano into this room in twenty minutes, I will lock every guard in this facility around your observation post and charge your entire detail with aiding and abetting a state-sanctioned execution of an unlawfully imprisoned man. Have a nice afternoon."

She didn't wait for his response. She walked out of the observation room, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird, knowing full well that she had just committed career suicide—and quite possibly started a constitutional war between Trenton and Washington.
