Chapter 3 - THE PRESS CONFERENCE ON THE STEPSBy 2:00 PM, the grand marble steps of the luxury hotel had transformed into a media circus.

Camera lenses gleamed like a field of mechanical sunflowers under the bright afternoon sun. Microphones bristled on tall metal stands like a forest of steel weeds. Reporters, bloggers, and live-streamers shouted over one another, their voices blending into a chaotic roar of sensationalism.

"Is it true the wedding is off?" "Mr. Stone, do you have a statement regarding your mother's actions?" "Naomi Brooks! Naomi, over here! Is the designer lawsuit real?"

Through the glass revolving doors stepped Naomi Brooks.

She wasn't wearing a bridal gown. She wasn't wearing tears. She wore a tailored midnight-blue pantsuit of her own design, sharp as a razor blade, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, impenetrable ponytail. She carried no notes, no handbag—only a manila folder tucked firmly under her arm.

Silence fell across the mob as if a switch had been thrown. Hundreds of camera shutters fired in unison, a rapid-fire staccato of clicking teeth eating up her image.

Naomi walked to the top of the steps, stood behind the wall of microphones, and adjusted the central stand with calm, deliberate precision.

"Good afternoon," Naomi began, her voice carrying clear, resonant, and steady across the plaza. "As many of you have seen online, my wedding scheduled for today has been cancelled."

A wave of murmurs rippled through the press corps.

"It was cancelled not due to cold feet, nor due to ordinary disagreements, but due to the deliberate, malicious destruction of forty-year-old family heirloom lace by Diane Stone and Lauren Stone, captured on video three hours before the ceremony."

From the side of the plaza, trying to slip through the perimeter using a side exit, Diane and Gabriel emerged into the sunlight. Diane was shielding her face with an expensive designer handbag, while Gabriel pushed through the crowd with a dark, thunderous expression.

"Lies! It's an extortion plot!" Diane screamed from the edge of the crowd, her voice cracking with hysteria. "She's a fraud! She trapped us!"

The cameras instantly swiveled away from Naomi, flashing blindingly toward Diane and Gabriel. Reporters swarmed them like hornets.

"Mrs. Stone! Do you deny cutting the dress?" "Gabriel! Are you stepping down as managing partner?"

Naomi watched them from the podium. She didn't raise her voice, but the sheer gravity of her next words cut straight through the noise of the mob.

"Today, I am not just announcing the end of a relationship," Naomi said clearly, her amber eyes scanning the lenses of the top financial networks. "Today, I am filing a multi-million-dollar civil lawsuit against Diane Stone for tortious interference, property destruction, and defamation. Furthermore, my legal team has submitted formal notice to the board of Stone & Associates to freeze all joint venture accounts tied to Diane Stone’s fraudulent asset concealment."

Gabriel stopped dead in his tracks five yards away. He stared at Naomi with eyes full of a broken, desperate plea.

"Naomi... stop," Gabriel whispered across the space between them. "Let's talk inside. Just you and me. Name your terms. Whatever you want—half the company, my shares, my home—it's yours. Just drop the lawsuit."

Naomi looked down at the man who had offered her everything too late.

May you like

"You still don't get it, Gabriel," Naomi said into the microphone, her voice echoing off the stone walls of the plaza. "I don't want your money. I don't want your shares. I want my dignity back. And I am going to take everything else you built while doing it."

She turned away from the microphones, ignored the screaming reporters, and walked down the steps past Gabriel without slowing her pace for even a single second.
