Chapter 4 - The Daughter of a GhostThe silence in the vault was so heavy it felt like underwater pressure.

Clara slid down the stone wall until she was sitting in a pathetic heap on the floor, her hands trembling over her face as dry, racking sobs finally broke through her defenses.

"He's dead," she choked out, her voice muffled behind her palms. "My father died in a ditch in Marseille six years ago. I haven't seen him since I was sixteen. I changed my name, I burned my papers, I came here to lose myself where nobody would ever find me... I swear to God, Mr. Duca, I didn't come here to spy. I just wanted a safe place for my baby."

Lorenzo didn't move. He sat motionless in his leather chair, watching her with an intensity that could melt steel. He had spent his entire life analyzing lies. He knew the micro-expressions of betrayal, the subtle shifts in posture that indicated a hidden weapon or a rehearsed alibi.

What he saw in Clara was something entirely different: absolute, exhausted ruin.

"Moretti knows," Lorenzo said softly.

Clara’s hands dropped from her face. Her bloodless lips parted in horror. "What?"

"Moretti didn't find that watch by accident," Lorenzo continued, standing up and walking slowly around the desk. His tall frame cast a long, menacing shadow over her. "He planted it. He knows who you are, Clara. Or at least, he suspects enough to use you as a pawn in his power struggle against me. By tomorrow morning, he plans to hand you over to the Syndicate council. You know what they do to blood-traitors and infiltrators."

"He'll take my baby," Clara whispered, the words sounding like glass grinding together in her throat. She lunged forward, grabbing the hem of Lorenzo’s trousers before Gianni could react. "Mr. Duca, please! Kill me! Do whatever you want to me, throw me in the harbor, skin me alive—just let Mia go! Take her to an orphanage, give her to a farmer in the hills, anything! Just keep her away from them!"

Lorenzo looked down at the desperate woman clutching his clothes. A strange, sharp pain twitched behind his ribs—a ghost of a memory from a childhood he had long since locked away, back when he still had a mother who sang to him before the world turned to ash.

He reached down, gripping Clara firmly by her shoulders, and hauled her to her feet with terrifying gentleness.

"Look at me," Lorenzo commanded.

Clara blinked her tear-swollen eyes, forcing herself to meet his fierce, unyielding gaze.

"Nobody takes a child from this house," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal purr that vibrated through the stone room. "Not Moretti. Not the council. Not God himself. Your father stole my brother's life twelve years ago, Clara. That debt is between him and me. But you and that little girl? You've been scrubbing my floors and living under my roof. In this house, my roof is a covenant."

He turned to Gianni, who stood statue-still by the door.

"Get a car ready," Lorenzo ordered. "Move Clara and the girl to the safehouse on the cliffs at San Lorenzo. Pack everything they own. No one leaves this estate until I deal with Moretti."
