Chapter 4 - THE SHARK IN THE SUITSarah gripped the handle of her worn canvas tote bag, her knuckles whitening.

“I don't know any lawyers,” Sarah said firmly. “And we’re not interested in whatever you’re selling or investigating.”

Marcus Vance didn't flinch. He smiled—a cold, calculated smile that didn't reach his eyes.

“Oh, you’re very much involved, Mrs. Carter,” Marcus said smoothly, taking a slow step closer. “Last night, a man dressed as Santa Claus handed your children a box of chocolates worth over two hundred dollars. That same man is currently under federal investigation for multi-million-dollar corporate fraud, embezzlement, and a seven-year-old vehicular manslaughter cover-up.”

Ethan gasped, dropping the chocolate box back onto the bench. Olivia hid behind Sarah’s coat.

“Leave us alone,” Sarah said, her voice trembling with anger. “He was just being kind to my kids. He didn't say who he was.”

“Kind?” Marcus chuckled softly, adjusting his gold-rimmed cufflinks. “Michael Thornton hasn't been kind to anyone in seven years. Every dollar he touches is stained with blood and stolen capital. And right now, the federal prosecutors are looking into every single person he interacted with in the 48 hours leading up to his arrest.”

Marcus leaned in closer, his voice dropping into a dangerous, conspiratorial whisper.

“Which brings us to you, Mrs. Carter. A down-on-her-luck former cleaner who suddenly receives lavish gifts from a fugitive billionaire on Christmas Eve. The police are already wondering if you’re a receiving agent for his hidden offshore accounts.”

Sarah felt the blood drain from her face. “That’s insane! I met him for two minutes yesterday! I didn't even know his name!”

“The police don’t care about what you know; they care about what the paper trail suggests,” Marcus said, pulling a folded document from his briefcase and holding it out. “Fortunately for you, I represent a group of private stakeholders who are willing to make this entire investigation go away—if you help us.”

Sarah stared at the paper. “Help you how?”

“Michael Thornton is fighting a desperate legal battle to save his company and his freedom,” Marcus said, his eyes glittering with predatory ambition. “All we need is a simple signed affidavit from you stating that Thornton approached your children with explicit intent to use them as financial leverage—and that he gave you a cash envelope along with those chocolates.”

Sarah’s jaw dropped. “You want me to lie? You want me to frame an innocent man?”

“It’s not a lie, Mrs. Carter; it’s an acceleration of justice,” Marcus smiled coldly. “And in exchange for your signature... our firm will clear all your debts, purchase a home for you and your children, and ensure you never have to work another day in your life. Refuse... and you’ll spend New Year’s Eve answering federal grand jury subpoenas while your children are placed in state protective custody.”

The threat hung in the freezing air like a razor blade.

Sarah looked down at Ethan, Emily, and Olivia, who were watching her with wide, terrified eyes. The choice wasn't a choice at all. It was a loaded gun pointed directly at her children’s future.
